The Academic Advisor provides high level quality academic support to the assigned student population (undergrad and grad) and will work collaboratively with the Office of the Registrar, Admissions, and the School of Professional Studies (SPS) academic/administrative staff to ensure student issues and concerns are addressed.  This individual's primary responsibility is to provide quality direct services to students.  Other responsibilities are related to and integral in continuous efforts to improve student satisfaction, student persistence, retention and ultimately the whole student experience.

Major Responsibilities:  

The Academic Advisor serves as the primary contact for an assigned roster of students to engage and guide them toward academic success. 

The Academic Advisor:

• Supports and advises students within SPS's STEM programs (MSDA, MSCS, MSPM, MSDA) with academic planning and navigation that helps students successfully achieve their educational goals.
• Serves as a liaison with faculty and other parties to address student concerns/issues.
• Develops a robust support network and resources for student success.
• Creates and implements support services and programs to students.
• Evaluates and monitors the needs of the assigned student population.
• Maintain list of assigned at-risk students and students placed on academic probation.  Create mitigation plan with these students and meet regularly to check in on progress.
• Monitor personal and shared email inbox
• Assist with recruitment and supervision of SPS Teaching Assistants
• Helps to implement SPS's academic integrity policy
• Assists with student-facing events such as orientation, awards ceremonies, commencement activities, etc.

Job Requirements:

• Master's degree required, preferably in higher education, counseling or related field.
• Professional experience in academic advising/student affairs or student development.  
• Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs and concerns of a diverse student population and demonstrated ability to meet their needs.
• Experience working with adult learners, international students, and online students.
• Effectively expresses oneself in oral and written communication.
• Displays proactive problem solving approach toward student engagement and success.
• Exercises sound, accurate and informed independent judgment.
• Maintain composure when faced with difficult or challenging situations.
• Collaborates effectively with others to achieve high quality student engagement and academic success.
• Demonstrates a high level of self-discipline and self-motivation to accomplish the duties and responsibilities of the position.
