Job description

• Read work orders or receive oral instructions to determine work assignments or material or

equipment needs.

• Record numbers of units handled or moved, using daily production sheets or work tickets.

• Move freight, stock, or other materials to and from storage, loading docks, delivery vehicles, or

containers, by hand, trucks, or other equipment.

• Sort cargo before loading and unloading.

• Assemble product containers or crates, using hand tools and precut lumber.

• Load and unload trucks.

• Carry needed tools or supplies from storage and return them after use.

• Install protective devices, such as bracing, padding, or strapping, to prevent shifting or damage to

items being transported.

• Maintain equipment storage areas to ensure that inventory is protected and organized.

• Obey traffic laws and follow established traffic and transportation procedures.

• Inspect and maintain vehicle supplies and equipment, such as gas, oil, water, tires, lights, or

brakes, to ensure that vehicles are in proper working condition.

• Report any mechanical problems encountered with vehicles.

• Verify the contents of inventory loads against shipping papers.

• Turn in receipts and money received from deliveries.

• Maintain records, such as vehicle logs, records of cargo, or billing statements, in accordance with

regulations.

• Read maps and follow written or verbal geographic directions.

• Report delays, accidents, or other traffic and transportation situations to bases or other vehicles,

using telephones or mobile two-way radios
