Community Engagement

Position is responsible for all duties and responsibilities set forth by statute and local policy pertaining to estates and wills. Performs advanced, professional work in the complicated maintenance of Probate which includes ensuring that estates and wills meet all compliances with the Code of Virginia and are duly recorded and forwarded to the Commissioner of Accounts.

Salary based upon experience and range is $40,446 to $49,749.

Typical Qualifications

EDUCATION: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and bachelor's degree in the legal field.


EXPERIENCE: Three (3) or more years' experience a legal environment (specifically with Virginia probate laws) or in a similar professional environment preferred.


OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Comprehensive knowledge of the Probate Delivery System and the laws and policies concerning the recording and filing of wills. Ability to provide customer service in a professional manner. Extensive knowledge and use of standard office practices and procedures. Ability to meet deadlines, and enter data expeditiously and accurately. Possess excellent communication skills. Extensive knowledge in the use of standard office equipment. Ability to multi-task and follow difficult oral and written instructions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, lawyers, co-workers, and any other agencies involved with the Clerk's Office.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND/OR REGISTRATIONS: CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND/OR REGISTRATIONS: Must obtain annual certification with the US Department of State Passport Agency. Annually complete Virginia Supreme Court courses related to legislative changes concerning civil, criminal, probation, miscellaneous laws, and updates to Supreme Court programs.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Requires moderate physical effort working almost exclusively with lightweight materials (up to 25 pounds) including but not limited to walking, talking, stooping, sitting (for extended periods), kneeling, bending, reaching and gripping. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operation of machines, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities. Office work has no exposure to environmental conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g., business office, light traffic).
