Position Location:This is a full-time position located in Augusta. This opportunity allows partial telework with management approval.

The Maine CDC Toxicology and Environmental Epidemiology Program is seeking a Toxicologist to assist with the development and operation of a blood testing surveillance program for per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) and to assist with the design and conduct of a PFAS biomonitoring and exposure study of farm workers. The position will work in a multi-disciplinary group of an environmental epidemiologist, public health physician, public health educator, toxicologists, and laboratorians. Maine CDC’s Toxicology and Environmental Epidemiology Program provides toxicology and environmental epidemiology expertise to the Maine CDC and other State agencies and is a key player in Maine’s efforts, as a national leader, to understand and respond to PFAS contamination of farmland amended with contaminated wastewater treatment plant sludge.

 

Core Responsibilities:

As a key member of the Environmental and Occupational Health (EOHP) team, your core responsibilities will include:
•    Perform literature searches and compile information on biomonitoring of PFAS in blood
•    Review emerging guidance for clinicians regarding PFAS blood testing in patients
•    Design a public health oversight program for making PFAS blood testing results a notifiable condition and reportable to Maine CDC
•    Participate in the design and conduct of PFAS related biomonitoring studies of exposed populations
•    Assist with preparing federal CDC grant applications and reports
•    Prepare scientific manuscripts for publication 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

A Master’s Degree in Toxicology, Environmental Health, or closely related field -OR- Bachelor’s Degree in Toxicology, Environmental Health, or closely related field and 2 years professional experience in Toxicology or Environmental Health.  Equivalent related experience may be substituted for educational requirements.

Preferred candidates will also have:
•    Knowledge and experience with toxicology principles and practices relevant to human health risk assessment
•    Knowledge and experience analyzing human biomonitoring data, preferable related to PFAS exposures
•    Knowledge and experience with undertaking an exposure assessment study
•    Training and experience in environmental epidemiology
•    Data compilation and statistical analyses
•    Strong computer skills, including MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint
•    Knowledge of and experience with statistical software applications such as SAS, Stata, or R  
•    The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse group of internal and external partners
