Under supervision within the Department of Psychiatry's Pacific Treatment and Research Center, the Staff Research Associate will assist with research on the mechanisms underlying alcohol sensitivity and tolerance in healthy social drinkers. Major responsibilities will include: assisting with the day-to-day operation of human laboratory research studies including functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) protocols; recruiting subjects, scheduling subject appointments, following study participants throughout the course of the study including obtaining informed consent, administering research instruments; assisting with preparing and writing Institutional Review Board (IRB) documents, Human Subjects applications and related correspondence; ordering, tracking and reconciling supplies and other purchases in UCSD's SAP Concur and Oracle systems. Laboratory duties include: monitoring participants undergoing human laboratory protocols including measuring vital signs; performing breathalyzer, urine pregnancy and drug testing; processing and shipping lab specimens, including pipetting and centrifugation. Research duties include: creating source documents, coding and entering data, managing a bibliographic database, and assisting with writing technical reports; assisting in database development and updating; abstracting data from academic articles to create charts, graphs, and informational slides for scientific presentations. This position will be an integral part of the research team providing technical support in the field of psychiatric/behavioral medicine research. Assist with other project and miscellaneous duties as required.
Theoretical knowledge of behavioral sciences, medical and/or pharmaceutical terminology and concepts (preferred) or a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, Biology, Cognitive Neuroscience or relevant related fields.
Knowledge, background, and willingness to become a certified operator of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner and to adhere to MRI safety protocols.
Knowledge of OPRP, HRPP policies and procedures, and HIPAA. Familiarity with the code of federal regulations (CFRs), Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines and other regulations for the conduct of clinical research.
Experience in recruiting research subjects into clinical studies. Experience in developing promotional presentations and materials. Experience with administration of semi-structured and structured clinical research interviews (e.g., MINI, SCID, SSAGA, SIGH-AD, TLFB) and self-report rating scales (e.g., CES-D, AUDIT, CIWA-AR, PANAS).
Basic knowledge of human clinical research methods. Demonstrated research experience in study coordination. Experience in coordinating various protocols with staff and subject schedules.
Knowledge of data collection, coding, entry, and security methods. Basic knowledge of data management. Meticulous and works well with detail; accurately creates labels for and labels laboratory supplies; able to review detailed questionnaires for completeness; verify entered data for accuracy.
Demonstrated experience using various software packages such as MS Word, PowerPoint, and databases such as Excel, and Access. Experience using medical library. Knowledge of PubMed, Medline and PsychINFO. Experience using EndNote bibliographic database.
Demonstrated experience in acquiring and handling human tissue specimens. Ability to handle and transport biological samples (blood, saliva and urine specimens). Experience with pipetting and centrifugation.
Demonstrated experience operating standard laboratory equipment (i.e., refrigerated centrifuge, -80 and -20 freezers with carbon dioxide backup systems).
Demonstrated experience ordering and maintaining office and laboratory supplies.
