ANML HEALTH TCHN 3 (Community Surgery Anesthesia Technician) Department Description

Job Summary Facilitates clinical teaching activities, patient care and client service within the Small Animal Community Surgery Service (CSS). Locations include the Gourley Clinical Teaching Center (GCTC) and the Center for Companion Animal Health (CCAH) units. Assist with and facilitate the daily receiving of patients into the CSS. Provide anesthesia technical support and coordinate and maintain a daily surgery schedule. Perform and instruct students in proper anesthetic and surgical preparation techniques. Take radiographs and assist with ultrasound examinations of patients. Assist in communication with clients, client education, and admit/discharge patients. RECRUITMENT PERIOD ONE MONTH: Applicants will be screened after two weeks; and then on a weekly basis. The position can be filled prior to the removal date. Position Information

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Maneuver/lift equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Handle animals weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Contact with animals, including restraint of animals (sometimes fractious) as required.
- May be required to wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including: gown, coveralls, gloves, masks, face shields, goggles, sleeves and head covers.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Work occasional overtime and various hours on short notice (including covering staff shortages and holiday shifts).
- This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.
- Work under regular exposure to zoonotic diseases, anesthesia, cleaning chemicals and exposure to radioactive patients.
- May require working with or around areas with sick animals, hazardous materials, and/or infectious diseases, and distraught clients.
- Work in high traffic areas with noise from animals and people.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Minimum License/Certification: - Current California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) License.
Minimum Education/Experience: - Experience with animal restraint, placing catheters, and venipuncture.
- Experience maintaining, & monitoring anesthesia in small animal patients.
- Experience responding to emergencies and providing CPR.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA): - Skill to independently provide intense moment to moment monitoring and reassessment of emergent, critically ill or anesthetized patients.
- Interpersonal, oral and written communication skills to interact with a diverse group of students, staff, clinicians and clients and recognize and manage difficult/unpleasant situations and/or individuals.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Preferred Education/Experience:
- Experience with aseptic/sterile scrubbing, gowning and gloving techniques.
- Experience handling complications of various surgical procedures; anticipating and responding quickly to surgeons and patient's needs.
- Experience instructing/performing a surgical shave and scrub, safely without contaminating surgery site; transport/move patients to O.R.
