POSITION TITLE: IN-SCHOOL SUSPENSION
REPORTS TO: BUILDING PRINCIPAL
OVER-TIME STATUS: NON-EXEMPT
PAY GRADE: 408
JOB SUMMARY: Performs intermediate paraprofessional protective service work monitoring student and maintaining security at the school; does related work as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Conducting in-school suspension, behavior and academic programs; implementing strategies and initiatives for students assigned to ISS per block; enforcing established rules and regulations.
- Monitors students who have been assigned to in-school suspension;
- Explains expected conduct and achievement;
- Assigns and checks student work during suspension periods; reviews student progress;
- Discusses with students appropriate behavior;
- Discusses behavior of students with administrators, teachers and parents;
- Prepares and records misconduct reports;
- Develops behavior packets;
- Maintains security during lunch periods;
- Develops learning packets in core content areas--English, Math, Science, Social Studies
- Conducts conflict mediation sessions;
- Investigates unusual conditions or disturbances involving student behavior;
- Gather and interpret data involving the students who are assigned to ISS;
- Collaborates with all teachers to provide the best possible learning environment for the in school suspension program;
- Knowledgeable regarding discipline techniques for handling
- Supervises student tasks and parent groups;
- Chairs teacher, parent, student committees on behavior management;
- Makes recommendations to principal on behavior and student performance;
- Supervises materials, activities, and resources for ISS students;
- Acts as advisor to school behavior programs;
- Serves on the Code of Student Conduct Board as requested;
- Confers with appropriate school personnel on matters of behavior and academic responsibilities;
- Submits reports as required;
- Manages the ISS program and regularly attends ISS meetings and conferences relating to the job;
- Develops and keeps a current data and record file on all ISS students;
- Maintains confidentiality on student behavior;
- Provides continuity across the system with the ISS citywide program;
- Understands culture, child development, social welfare and basic psychology for teaching and working with students in an urban setting;

JOB SPECIFICATIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Thorough knowledge of practices concerning in-school suspension programs and appropriate methods of dealing with misconduct; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to recognize and identify activities or situations which have or may become a problem or emergency requiring immediate attention; ability to think and act quickly, effectively and responsibly under emergency situations; good physical condition; ability to present ideas effectively; establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with staff, supervisors, general public, parents, administrators and other school officials; knowledge of principals, practices, and procedures of student services and school law.
This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects; work requires standing, and walking; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, and noise.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Applicants must possess an associates of arts degree or have completed 48 credit hours (two years) of classes at an accredited college or university, or successfully pass the Para Pro exam (score of at least 455).
