**The Department of Otolaryngology is growing and intends to hire at either the Research Assistant or Research Associate role. This classification will be based on the qualifications of the successful candidate. The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Otolaryngology is seeking a Research Assistant or Associate to provide support for genetic hearing loss research by conducting experiments, collecting and analyzing results and performing operational duties associated with the laboratory (bench and field), animal or human research. Research in the natural, health, physical and social sciences is included in this job family. Key areas of responsibilities include conducting research activities/experiments, collecting, analyzing and summarizing data, preparing reports, contributing to manuscripts/publications, administrative and project management, facilities and equipment management, and supervision/staffing. Specifically, these responsibilities will apply within the setting of a hearing research laboratory utilizing molecular biology, animal, cell culture, histologic, and microscopic methodologies.

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Research Assistant:

Track information in MS Word and Excel spreadsheets for research purposes.

Performed data entry and correction on source documents and into electronic data capture system.

Perform research activities based upon protocols developed by other research staff or principal investigator of the research project.

Read and review articles as directed.

As individual skills develop, analyze literature to develop hypothesis for discussion with other researchers or principal investigator.

Research Associate:

Track information in MS Word and Excel spreadsheets for research purposes.

Perform data entry and correction on source documents and into electronic data capture system.

Prepare progress reports and provide support for the sponsored research studies.

Perform research activities based upon protocols developed by other staff or principal investigator of the research project.

Experiments, Investigations, Evaluations:

Research Assistant:

Read and understand protocols.

Arrange and plan daily activities to prepare for research protocols.

Perform a variety of molecular and cellular biology assays and experimental tests involving PCR, DNA sequencing, next generation sequencing, cloning, and mammalian cell culture.

Set up and operate research materials or equipment.

Perform procedures assuring fidelity to protocols.

Perform varied tasks in the research environment (lab).

Adhere to safety and compliance guidelines.

Collect, record and consolidate data as directed by the Principal Investigator.

Track progress of research activities.

Research Assistant:

Collect, Analyze and Summarize Data; Prepare Reports; Contribute to Manuscripts, Publications:

Collect and track, perform data entry for reports and maintain records of methods used.

Prepare materials for reports.

As skills develop, analyze data.

Prepare bibliographies and abstracts for publications and may present results/finding at team, departmental and national meetings.

Administrative and Project Management:

Assist with ACURF or similar protocol submissions, if applicable.

Track various indicators of project progress and summarize in reports to the research team.

Obtain subject consent and assist with IRB submissions or equivalent protocol.

Research Associate:

Read and understand protocols.

Perform a variety of molecular biology assays and experimental tests including PCR, RT-PCR, minigene assays, Sanger sequencing, Co-immunoprecipitation, electromobility shift assays and bacterial cloning.

Perform high throughput experiments including RNA-seq using next generation sequencing.

Perform a variety of cellular biology assays and experimental tests including mammalian cell culture, reporter assays.

Perform and meet proficiency and competency testing standards and maintain data and equipment records according to regulatory guidelines.

Develop protocol optimization.

Research Assistant:

Knowledge of formal methodologies, tools and techniques for conducting research, studies and tests.

Knowledge of and the ability to locate, interpret and evaluate research findings compiled and documented by others and use this material to support empirical research.

Knowledge of and ability to utilize tools and techniques for producing well-written, meaningful and usable documentation of research findings.

QUALIFICATIONS

Research Assistant:

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Preference: Biology, Microbiology, Genetics or Similar

Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.

Experience with molecular biology techniques including PCR, DNA extraction, gel electrophoresis and Sanger sequencing is required.

Experience with cloning and mammalian cell culture is highly desirable.

Experience and willingness to work with rodent animals (mice) and to acquire expertise in relevant histologic and surgical procedures under direction provided by principal investigator and other staff is highly desirable.

Experience with MS Excel, Word is required.

Research Associate:

A Master's of Science degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Preference: Biology, Microbiology, Genetics or Similar

· Experience with molecular biology techniques including PCR, RT-PCR, Sanger sequencing.

· Experience with bacterial cloning.

· Experience with RNA isolation

· Experience with mammalian cell culture

· Experience with acquisition and analysis of nucleic acid and amino acid sequence data

Experience managing large data sets and maintaining highly organized and detailed research records.

Desirable Qualifications

· Experience with next generation sequencing

· Experience developing primers, amplimer validation and protocol development

· Experience preparing solutions and purchasing supplies

· Experience with protein assays including co-immunoprecipitation, electromobility shift assays.

· Experience with high throughput experiments including RNA sequencing.
