HOACNY provides cancer care services, Monday through Friday, day hours at three convenient locations in East Syracuse, Syracuse and Auburn. Cancer Registrar

Under limited supervision, identify, compile and maintain records of patients diagnosed and/or treated for malignancies or reportable tumors at HOA, and reporting these cases to the NYSDOH. Position is at our Brittonfield office in East Syracuse New York ( not remote).

Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

Knowledge and exhibit compliance in data coding, Medical Terminology, Anatomy & Physiology, ACoS-FORDS coding, ICD-0 coding, Cancer Staging (AJCC, Collaborative, EOD and SEER Staging). Working knowledge of Windows-based software Data Entry and verification (quality control). Knowledge of computer systems and applications. Knowledge of data abstraction techniques. Organizational and prioritization skills with good follow through. Investigative/analytical skills with detail orientation. Skill in verbal and written communication. Ability to deal with patients, medical and administrative staff, and the public effectively. Ability to understand, analyze and interpret medical, surgical, treatment information and terminology. Ability to verify data input and correct errors. Ability to work effectively within role independently and with other team members. Ability to read, interpret and apply policies and procedures. Ability to independently handle multiple ongoing or recurrent tasks.

EDUCATION:

1. Minimum qualifications: AAS degree in a health related field, or Bachelor's degree in a health related field; OR an Associate's degree in a health related field plus two years of experience in a related field that includes medical/disease coding; OR certification as a tumor registrar (CTR). Accepted related fields are Biology, Health Information Management, Nursing, Medical Laboratory Technology, Radiation Therapy, Physical Therapy/Assistant and Public Health.

2. Courses in medical terminology, Anatomy & Physiology OR completion of NCRA-approved post-secondary curriculum in cancer data management/cancer registry OR equivalent on-the-job training OR >5 yrs experience in Tumor Registry abstracting.

Experience: Prefer at least 1 year experience as a Certified Cancer Registrar or at least 3-5 years highly relevant clinical experience in hematology-oncology.


Certificate/License: License in a related medical field and/or Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) certification.
