It is a joint venture between UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco, with the administrative operations located on the Berkeley campus. This position is located at the UC Berkeley campus.

The IGI is presently seeking a highly motivated Research Scientist to develop an independent research program focused on engineering microbial communities for climate change mitigation, improved food production, and better human health. Specific goals will be engineering and evaluation of new genome editing enzymes to reprogram microbial community functions, discovery and improvement of microbial gene delivery systems, development of advanced methodologies to infer gene functions and genetic interactions in non-model and non-isolated microbial community members, establishment of broad host range metabolic selection markers, and application of these technologies to engineer natural and model microbial communities to positively impact agriculture, climate, and human health.

The Research Scientist will collaborate with other investigators at UCB and the Doudna Lab, affiliated universities, and labs in the use of genome editing to engineer microbial community function. Occasional travel will be required.

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
PhD (or equivalent international degree)

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
5 years of postdoctoral experience.

Preferred qualifications
PhD or equivalent international degree in Chemical, Biological Engineering, Molecular Genetics, Cell Biology, Systems Biology, Biochemistry, or Microbiology.
1-2 years full time research experience (including metagenomics) following postdoctoral studies.
Experience publishing multiple articles and/or patents.
