Overview The Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division of PNNL is accelerating the transition to a decarbonized, efficient, resilient, and secure energy system through basic and applied research. We leverage a strong technical foundation in power and energy systems and advanced data analytics to drive innovation, transform markets, and shape energy policy. The Distributed Systems Group (DSG) is focused on designing, testing, and applying edge solutions to enhance the resiliency and efficiency of our Nation's infrastructure and of distributed sites that rely on that infrastructure, while paving the way for integrating large numbers of devices into a holistic energy system. Responsibilities The Distributed Systems Group is seeking a Master's Research Assistant Intern to help advance the operational practice and capability of the electric system to adapt, control, and integrate renewable energy resources, from aggregation of distributed systems through to onboarding new technologies at all scales. The candidate will work with a team to investigate far-reaching innovative strategies for decarbonized energy systems. The ideal candidate will have domain expertise in renewable and storage technology, energy equity, distribution system engineering & infrastructure, or related fields. This position will be mentored by research engineers and analysts with rich industry, community, and research experiences. Key responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to: Write and communicate public-facing primers on transmission infrastructure, substations, hardware, both the physical characteristics and component-level purpose and function. Participate in multi-disciplinary teams to take the above knowledge and integrate it with experts in conservation, recreation, finance, and local governance. Support development of technical material and planning next stage investment in frameworks for clean energy futures. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: Candidates must be matriculated/enrolled in a Master's program at an accredited college or university. Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required. Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of non-energy value contributions available from various renewable energy generators and how these may differ from conventional generators. Demonstrated understanding of system operator or utility functions and of state and federal utility regulatory structures. Capable of applying a broad base of existing theories, principles, and concepts to a specialty field. Demonstrated awareness of generation or transmission planning paradigms. An understanding of optimization techniques and experience developing and/or deploying analytical tools within a power systems context. Record of publishing technical material or supporting the production of technical material. Other preferred qualifications include experience working with or leading technical teams, and the ability to independently manage research tasks.
