Position description The Center for Law, Energy & the Environment is seeking to hire an Associate Director to coordinate climate change research initiatives. The Associate Director will play a key role in CLEE's leadership and strategy with a combination of responsibilities across program development, research coordination and management, project management, and outreach and communications.
The Center for Law, Energy & the Environment (CLEE) is based at the UC Berkeley School of Law, which benefits from one of the leading environmental law programs in the nation. Building on UC Berkeley's history of and commitment to research and public service, CLEE leverages the intellectual resources of Berkeley faculty and students in furtherance of applied research in a variety of environmental and energy law and policy areas. CLEE's research priorities include combating climate change, advancing sustainable energy, addressing water allocation and management challenges, and sustaining healthy oceans, among other pressing environmental and energy challenges.
The Associate Director will manage research projects, supervise the research fellow programs, support organizational fundraising, and collaborate on organizational strategy and development. Tasks may include guiding research projects, convening expert workshops, and leading development of research projects, blog posts, and other outputs; coordinating project planning and career development for research fellows; conducting outreach and coordination with stakeholders and partners, managing research , graduate students, and other affiliates, identifying publication opportunities, and engaging in outreach with interested parties, media, and academics, and others.
This position is located in Berkeley.
Primary Responsibilities: - Sustain and build CLEE's research fellow program, including:
- Personnel management, planning of professional development activities, and coordination and oversight of research fellow activities;
- Meeting regularly with research fellows to support and track research progress;
- Supporting research fellow mentorship and professional development; and
- Recruitment of new research fellows.
- Support CLEE's communication and outreach activities across a range of media and work products, including drafting op-eds and blog posts; materials for the CLEE website; contributing to newsletters, annual reports, and other organizational materials.
- Support development and execution of CLEE research initiatives, including new effort focused on zero-emission mobility in California. Specific tasks will include:
- Developing research, outreach, and staffing plans;
- Establishing and maintaining relationships with diverse stakeholders, including government, community, and industry;
- Supporting research, engaging stakeholders, and partnering with communities to develop innovative policy solutions; and
- Collaborating with the Executive Director to develop and execute a fundraising strategy to expand research initiatives.
- Collaborate with the Executive Director, program leads, and Advancement Director to develop strategic priorities for future CLEE initiatives, including developing project concepts and fundraising proposals;

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Candidates must hold an advanced degree at time of application Preferred qualifications
Knowledge of environmental and climate policy
Familiarity with law and policy research
Knowledge of California and US climate policy
Strong research management and writing skills
Strong project management skills
Commitment to collaboration and interdisciplinary team development
Strong communication skills
Demonstrated commitment to and understanding of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) in the workplace
Experience working in an academic research setting
5+ years experience working in a field related to California climate and environmental policy.
5+ years experience in nonprofit program development and management
Experience supervising early career researchers
Experience working with state and local policy makers, environmental organizations, and other stakeholders in California
Expertise in zero-emission mobility policy
