Job description
Manager of FM - Illinois Soul Illinois Public Media Job Summary This position is responsible for the programming, engagement and on-air sound of Illinois Soul, including helping to determine, implement, and supervise the program schedule; local interstitials; local programs; community outreach; and sponsorships.
Duties & Responsibilities Develop and Foster Community Support:
- Serve as liaison between Illinois Soul and the regional Black community
- Represent Illinois Soul on Campus to academic units and student organizations
- Work with key community partners to grow Illinois Soul's visibility and audience
- Manage community events with other IPM depts. & partners
- Articulate the station's vision to community, partners and supporters
Resource Development:
- Develop revenue sources who want to connect with the Black community, including CPB, Illinois Arts Council, etc.
- Build revenues to grow IL Soul's programs and services
- Work with SPA to apply grants for special projects
- Work closely with Development on Membership campaigns
- Works closely with the Development team to develop and enhance underwriting relationships and revenue
Programming and Promotions
- Assist with the selection of music for R&B and other local programs
- Develop non-news programming, working with the Chancellor's office, College of Music, and Illinois Youth Media and other campus and community partners
- Work with traffic and other station voices' on spots, promos, drops, etc. to give the station an authentically local & Black sound
- Develop interstitial content that engages with the community
- Work with cross-department colleagues on local programming, news/public affairs, marketing, and development
Administration and Operations
- Oversees daily operations of Illinois Soul in coordination with Director of Broadcast Operations
- Works with Traffic and promotion staff to ensure quality programming and on-air sound
- Maintains working relationship with all departments within the station
- Provides constructive feedback to on-air hosts to maximize their performance
- Works with marketing team to develop promotions, and events to raise station's profile
- Works closely with Development to produce and execute on-air membership campaigns
- Collaborates with Digital Team in coordinating and providing content for the app and web site
- Establishes and maintains professional relationships with independent producers, artists, composers and other industry contacts
- Monitors trends and activities that are relevant to the IL Soul's mission and makes program and advocacy recommendations to the Executive Director and leadership team
- Ensure operation of station in accordance with FCC regulations and policies
- Works with the Executive Director on budgetary matters
- Assist with occasional on-air work
Physical Demands Additional Physical Demands An exempt academic professional position that requires sitting, using computers in an office setting, greeting the public, and comfortable traveling to interstate and intrastate meetings.
Minimum Qualifications 1. Any one or any combination totaling three (3) years (36 months) of the following types of preparation:
A. progressively more responsible work experience in the production and presentation of radio or television programs, social media, and/or print or online journalism
B. vocational training in radio and/or television production, journalism, social media, news or feature writing and/or announcing or closely related fields
C. college course work in radio/television, journalism, social media, news or feature writing or closely related fields
- 60 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
- 75 semester hours equals one (1) year and six (6) months (18 months)
- 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
- 120 semester hours or a Bachelor's degree equals three (3) years (36 months)
2. One (1) year (12 months) of work experience in the production and presentation of radio or television programs, social media, and/or print or online journalism in addition to the preparation required in #1 above.
3. One (1) year (12 months) of work experience comparable to that performed at the Media Writer/Producer/Announcer I level of this series or in other positions of comparable responsibility.
Preferred Qualifications Education:
- Bachelor's degree in relevant field or equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience:
- Familiarity with radio operations
- Supervisory experience
- Excellent communication skills
- Strong familiarity with serving the Black community
- Knowledge of R&B, jazz and other music genres
- Skilled in using Microsoft Office Suite and On-line meeting software
- Demonstrated advocacy and leadership related to racial, ethnic, gender and/ other intersectional identities
- Experience supervising, evaluating, and training staff and students
- Familiarity with public radio
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Knowledge of and experience with the Black marketplace
- Broadcast or digital experience
- A strong affinity for public media
- A proven ability to lead a high-profile enterprise
- A track record of achievement in diversity, equity and inclusion.
- Able to manage multiple priorities
- Excellent management and communication skills with the ability to work in a highly collaborative work environment.
- Knowledge of jazz and R&B music formats
- Appreciation for non-profit mission
- Ability to manage budgets and business process
- Ability to represent Illinois Soul to select partners, communities, national organizations, and other public service organizations.
- Skilled in using digital tools (cameras, apps, social media, etc.)
- Skilled at adding content to websites using web content standards
Appointment Information This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 4686 - Media Writer/Producer/Announcer II position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 4/1/2024. The starting salary for this position is $65,000, and is commensurate with experience.
