This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Warren, Michigan three times per week, at minimum 

The Role

A Virtual Propulsion Engineer (VPE), Analysis Engineer in the Battery - Structures, Thermal, Electrical & HV System team performs battery module and pack system level FEA structural analysis for high voltage battery module, pack and vehicle integration.  Work closely with vehicle CAE team to consider integration of battery into vehicle structure.  Provide results and technical consultation to battery and vehicle engineers.  Deliver design solutions which are robust and reliable utilizing optimization and statistical methods.  Develop battery concepts for early vehicle synthesis and improve production designs.  Provide requirements for improvements to advanced simulation and validation techniques. 

What You'll Do

Perform cell, module and pack-level structure analysis for early design and verification of battery concepts, components, and support systems including their vehicle integration.

Provide vibration, stiffness, stress, fatigue, durability, and crash/safety results with minimal mass penalty and optimal manufacturing.

Perform FEA analysis on Manufacturing process and tooling developments.

Conduct shape and size topology optimization.

Develop and Conduct Manufacturing and assembly operation simulation from Cell to Module to Pack.

Develop and coordinate battery structural verification activities.

Prepare CAD and material data as needed for FEA model creation.

Effectively communicate findings to internal/external customers using appropriate media.

Meet or exceed deadlines for structured product development timelines, quality and cost.

Collaborate with broader engineering team for structured design integration, new proposals, problem solving, and system optimization.

Provide requirements for improvements to advanced simulation activities

Participate in benchmarking activities.

Additional Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

Bachelor of Science in Engineering

2+ years of experience with model creation and FEA analysis

5 years of Engineering experience

High level of oral and written communication skills

Knowledge in structural engineering, materials, large-scale nonlinear problems, optimization, topology, reliability, robust design and process automation

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

Master of Science in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering

Experience in using ABAQUS (Implicit, Explicit, ABAQUS CAE), ANSYS Workbench, ANSA, Hypermesh, iSIGHT, NASTRAN, Optistruct, GENESIS. 

Experience in using UG NX

Experience applying FEA tools to Manufacturing process and understanding of manufacturing process and tooling will be a plus and preferred.

Direct experience applying FEA tools to battery or propulsion-related systems

High level of interpersonal skills to work independently and effectively with others

Familiarity or practical experience with the principles of vehicle propulsion system design, operation, or testing

Working knowledge of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles, Electrochemistry and Li-Ion batteries and cell design

High level of analytical ability where problems are unusual and difficult

Experience with programming in Java, Python, MATLAB, or equivalent languages

Highly proficient with Microsoft Office products
