POSITION PURPOSE:
Facilitates communication between students who are deaf and/or hard of hearing and others. Uses sign language to convey teacher instruction and intent. As a related service, provides support in language development. Provides voice to sign, sign to voice, or oral transliteration/interpretation services. Participates as a team member to plan, review, and share information. Serves as a resource to other school personnel requiring assistance with hard of hearing and deaf students.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSAs)
- Considerable knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; Google Apps;
- Knowledge of classroom procedures and instructional programs;
- Effective time management skills;
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form using a variety of communication techniques and tools to ensure the appropriate flow of information, collaborative efforts, and feedback;
- Ability to complete tasks and minimize errors with attention to detail;
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism regarding individual student’s performance and follow school board policies and interpreter code of ethics;
- Ability to exercise good judgement and maintain sensitive to private/delicate matters;
- Ability to handle information in an appropriate and confidential manner;
- Ability to work independently without close supervision;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school system staff and parents.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
- Associate’s degree in Educational Interpreting from an accredited program or the Cued Speech Transliterator Training, Evaluation, and Certification Unit (TECUnit);
- A minimum of a 3.3 on the Educational Interpreter Proficiency Assessment (EIPA);
- No prior experience is required;
- Annually complete 20 hours of training related to interpreting that has been approved by the local education agency.
NOTE : The current educational interpreters who do not meet the new Level I standards have up to June 30, 2024, to meet the standards and are paid at the Noncertified Pay Grade 24 until they meet the Level I standards (effective July 1, 2021). The new Educational Interpreters entering the workforce at this level have 3 years to meet the requirements of an Educational Interpreter II to continue with employment in a public-school setting.
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
- Must hold and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license according to the State of NC requirements.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Interprets for deaf and hard of hearing students in academic and nonacademic activities, individually or in groups (e.g., classroom instruction, tests, library, computer lab, recess, sports, music, assemblies, special events, after school activities, etc.) for the purpose of facilitating communication.
- Interprets at various meetings as may be requested (e.g., IEP, individual teacher/parent conferences, etc.) for the purpose of facilitating communication with deaf or hard of hearing students.
- Interprets or transliterates all language necessary for student’s education for the purpose of facilitating effective communication.
- Participates in meetings (e.g., staff in-service, workshops, etc.) for the purpose of receiving or conveying information related to serving the general goals of education for deaf or hard of hearing students.
- Prepares for daily classroom lectures and activities (e.g., review materials ahead of lectures, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring a clear understanding and interpretation.
- Provides support/tutoring to the deaf or hard of hearing student for the purpose of facilitating communication and/or reinforcing classroom objectives.
- Responds to inquiries from administrators, teachers and other staff for the purpose of providing information or referring to appropriate personnel.
- Performs other related duties, as assigned.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This job operates in a professional office environment and has a noise level of mostly low to moderate. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, scanners ,copiers, and auditory interpretation equipment. The position, at times, must be able to come into direct contact with school system staff and parents. Work is considered medium physical work, requiring the exertion of up to 25 pounds of force. The work requires driving automotive equipment.
