The State of New Hampshire, Department of Justice has a full time vacancy for a Legal Research Assistant.

Summary:

Performs administrative assistant/support services to the Attorney General, Deputy Attorney General, Chief of Staff and Director of Administration for the Department of Justice and renders personnel recruiting and management services as warranted.



Responsibilities:

Performs administrative support for the Attorney General, Deputy Attorney General, Chief of Staff and Director of Administration and Administrative Office designees to include scheduling, correspondence, meeting agendas and general liaison services.

In conjunction with the Chief of Staff and the Director of Administration: posts positions, collects applicant data, schedules interviews of classified and unclassified staff and prepares applicant correspondence.

Maintains revolving fund, requests reimbursement of account as needed to maintain sufficient funds to pay court-related fees and Drug Task Force purchases.

Communicates with the Governor’s Office, legislators and Administrative Services on a daily basis to obtain and impart confidential information to be used by all parties in the preparation of various matters.

Provides case and litigation needs including discovery, witness folders, pleadings and hearing/trial preparation.

Preserves chronological and historical documents for each individual Attorney General.

Coordinates the timely review of requests for Attorney General sign-on to amicus briefs letters and assures that response deadlines are met.

Receives calls for Administrative Office staff, determines whether or not immediate response is necessary and handles calls accordingly.

Other information:



Education: Bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university with major study in law, paralegal studies, a related legal field or secretarial science. Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.

Experience: Four years’ experience in the legal research field, with at least two years in a supervisory capacity. Each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.

License/Certification: None required.

RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS:

Knowledge of legal research procedures. Ability to explain statutory laws, precedent and procedural use.

Ability to prepare and draft legislation. Ability to detect and correct errors relating to contracts, legislation and legal briefs.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with a wide variety of agencies as concerns legal matters. Ability to supervise a variety of para-professional positions in the legal field.

Ability to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with legislators, attorneys, law enforcement officials and the general public. Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency appointing authority.
