General Statement of Duties

There are several positions available throughout several different County departments for County Manager's Summer Student Academy for Career and Workforce Development for a current high school students, or those who will graduate from high school in 2024. Henrico County Public School students are preferred.

Essential Duties

There are several positions available throughout several different County departments for County Manager's Summer Student Academy for Career and Workforce Development for a current high school student, or those who will graduate from high school in 2024. Henrico County Public School students are preferred.

Start Date : June 5, 2024.

End Date : by the start of the new school year. Note: Some departments may have the ability for the student to continue throughout the school year based on their budget, their needs, and student's performance, interest, and availability.

Internship Status : Paid, $15.00 per hour. Internships are limited to a maximum of 29 hours per week based on the work and student availability.

Work Schedule : It is expected that the student will have transportation to and from the work site and that they will create a work schedule with the supervisor for the summer.

Expectation : The student can expect to learn about the department and the operations for the specific section that they will be assigned as well as what it is like to work in a professional environment and as a part of a team. You will be surrounded by many professionals who can provide mentorship and help you learn about careers in your field of study or interest.

Summer Internships available are listed below with illustrative scope of duties and responsibilities for summer 2024 along with the total number of students being hired.
1. Circuit Court Clerk's Office (1): We will hire one student who may be assigned clerical work to include filing, shredding, data entry and other projects. This is a good opportunity for students to gain a behind the scenes view of the work involved in the legal process and court proceedings; Work hours : Within M-F, 8 am- 4:30 pm. Work Location : Henrico County Courts, 4309 E. Parham Road, Henrico, VA 23228.

2. Division of Fire (1-2): We will hire 1-2 students who will work within our Training Division to support the continuing education program development, delivery, and support the work of our EMS Training Staff. Duties could also include helping to develop and review existing EMS policy and well as working on issues of the county's CARE, STAR and Addiction Task Force, and the students rotating between these activities as well as riding along in ambulances on EMS calls.
Certification Requirements : Applicant is preferred to have VA EMT certification or must have successfully completed VA EMT course and be eligible for certification testing . Attire Requirements: Students will be provided with a shirt. Student will need to have BDU pants and steel toe boots/shoes. Work Hours : M-F, generally two 10-hour days on the ambulance and then a half day 8:30 to 12:30 one day a week.

3. Division of Police
(1-4): We will hire up to four students who will be assigned to the Animal Protection Unit to provide daily care to for the animals and their habitat, respond to inquiries from staff and public, assist with monitoring, documenting, and addressing animal behavior and health conditions, could help our contracted Veterinarian with general care, and other duties as assigned. This position requires a student who is motivated to perform with little to no supervision. This opportunity is best suited for students who are in a Vet Science program or those who have worked with animals. Work hours : flexible within Monday-Saturday between the hours of 10 am-4:30 pm. 4. Extension Office
(1): We will hire one student who will be assigned to help staff create new content for educational presentations and outreach events, marketing, web design, and clerical duties. This is an opportunity for a student to learn about educational opportunities and programs offered to the community and what it takes to provide these services. Work hours : M-F within 8 am-4:30 pm. Depending on the student's availability there could be hours outside this window to help at a program event.

5. General Services
(7): We will hire four students who will be assigned to work within :

Building and Grounds (5):
Central Automotive Maintenance (2): We will hire two students and seek students within Diesel or Automotive Programs to assist staff in the performance or routine maintenance for our fleet of vehicles. Students should have their own steel toe-shoes, uniform will be provided. 6. Information Technology (2): We will hire two students who will be assigned to our help desk. Duties could include helping County employees in troubleshooting computer issues, installing hardware or software, and implementing computer upgrades. This is an opportunity for a student to learn about providing good customer services and working in a professional IT environment. Work hours : M-F within 8 am - 4:30 pm. Work Location : 4301 E. 7. Mental Health and Developmental Services/MHDS
(up to 3). The desired students should have knowledge of Microsoft Office products. The selected students will be assigned to work at either our Woodman Road office and or the East Center .

This opportunity will include some public contact when helping at the front desk. The student will be assigned to work on current projects established by agency programs. Students will work in rotation within the agency providing clerical assistance to include: Greeting callers and visitors; opening, sorting, and distributing mail, using a computer to input, retrieve, verify, and research information; create and/or update information in excel spreadsheets; maintain and review department supplies and inventory and request when needed; box and prepare reports and other documentation for storage; make copies and help prepare for board and other agency meetings/trainings; filing and assisting with record audits; assist with agency chart room with retrieving, purging, and filing records; other duties as assigned.
Work Hours : M - F, within 8 am - 5 pm.
Work Location : Woodman Road Office - 10299 Woodman Road, Glen Allen, VA 23060, and/or East Center : 3908 Nine Mile Road, Henrico, VA 23223.

8. Public Utilities
(up to 6): We will hire students depending on the student's studies and interest they could be assigned to work on current projects at Civil, Mechanical, Environmental, engineering-related duties; working with mechanical equipment and instrumentation, data collection, quality assurance as well as working on special projects at either our Water Reclamation Facility or Solid Waste Division. The selected student for the Operations Division could work in our metering group or front office in our business group.

9. Public Works
(2): We will hire 2 students who would rotate through each of the Public Works Divisions Engineering, and Environmental Services for a variety of experience that includes transportation design, drainage design, construction, environmental engineering, traffic engineering and road maintenance.

The major emphasis area of this internship would focus on the transportation development and environmental services conducted by the Department of Public Works. Work Location : Annex Building 4305 E. Parham Road, Henrico VA 23228; Attire: Business casual to allow for jeans depending on the current assignment. Safety equipment such as books, hard hats, safety vests, etc. will be provided as needed. Work hours : within M-F, 8 am-4:30pm.

All students should have:
Strong foundational knowledge in a field relevant to internship; excellent interpersonal skills, excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse audience of County employees and citizens integral to the internship; excellent organization and research skills with the ability to collect and organize facts/tasks effectively; excellent attention to details; excellent knowledge of and familiarity with computer systems with demonstrated proficiency in the use of a personal computer and common software products (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point); ability to multitask and manage priorities; ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as a part of a team; and ability to meet assigned deadlines. Internships are intended to complement the student's academic program so the intern must bring foundational knowledge as well as a strong interest in the assigned department's mission and operations and be prepared to work in a fast-paced environment. The intern will receive training relevant to the assigned responsibilities, clear direction regarding expectations and feedback concerning their performance. Interns will finish the internship having gained broad experience in various aspects of the operations of the assigned department as well as broad basic skills and industry knowledge. Internships may include extensive public contact. Internships may be an integral part of a team or may require the intern to work more independently. The intern will also learn how to work in a professional environment and have opportunities to network with department leaders and other professionals in the internship field.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: HCPS preferred, high school student studying or with relevant skills, knowledge and abilities related to position needs; prefer a student who is a rising junior, junior or senior graduating in June 2022.

Experience: Relevant high school, advanced placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), or specialty center classes (vocational or technical); relevant job experience; Completion of courses in relevant degree or vocational/technical program; relevant job or volunteer experience;
Or: Any equivalent combination education and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities relevant to the internship.
