Job Title: Middle School Science Teacher

Reports to: Head of Middle School and Chair of Science Department
Job Description:
The Middle School Science Department seeks a dynamic, full-time Science teacher to begin in the 2023-2024 school year. This teacher will assume duties and responsibilities, consistent with expectations for all Middle School teachers, which consists of the primary teaching load of four sections, an advisory, and at least one activity.
Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Teach four sections of Grade 8 Science - Concepts in the Physical Sciences
- Intense focus on developing reading, writing, inquiry, research, problem solving, and critical analysis skills.
- Serve as a Grade 8 Advisor
- Responsibilities include advocating for the students, communicating with parents about advisees’ progress, guiding advisees through daily school life, sharing information, and leading discussions.
- Teacher Collaboration
- Attends regular meetings for Grade 8 with student support teams to discuss student concerns and progress.
- Collaborates with the math teachers in Grade 8 and Grade 6 & 7 Science teachers to coordinate a clear scope and sequence from grade to grade in terms of both subject matter and skill development.
- Collaborates with the Director of Teaching and Learning, Middle School Dean of Students and School Counselors when appropriate to ensure students are being fully supported and challenged.
- Participate in all required meetings.
- Perform other supervisory duties as required of all Middle School teachers - recess and snack, lunch, study hall, morning greeting, etc.
- Communicate with parents/guardians about student and advisee progress as necessary.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree (in Science preferred).
- At least 1 to 3 years of head classroom teaching experience (preferred).
- Possess a sound understanding of the developmental stages of middle school students.
- Experience developing and implementing units of study aimed at skill development and content delivery in the science classroom.
- Ability and willingness to facilitate differentiated, student-centered best practices.
- Possess an understanding of and expertise in facilitating hands-on, experiential labs, research, science-based writing instruction, and fostering student inquiry.
- Ability and capacity to nurture student discovery, autonomy of thought and skill development.
- Demonstrated cross-cultural competence--ability to effectively teach, learn, and engage in a multicultural environment with a diverse student body--in pedagogical practice and multicultural curriculum content.
- Demonstrated capacity in culturally responsive professional practices, excellent communication skills, and ability to constructively collaborate with colleagues.
- Demonstrated capacity to thrive in our diverse community, including but not limited to diversity in race, ethnicity, gender identity, socio-economic status, ability/disability, belief, sexual orientation, and national origin according to our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion principles.
- Must have a demonstrated alignment with King’s Mission and Virtues .
