Roux Summer Research Internship Health Data Science About the Opportunity Summer Research Internships at The Roux Institute The Roux Institute Summer Research Internship Program is a 10-week full-time internship for graduate and undergraduate learners on-site at the Roux Institute campus of Northeastern University in Portland, ME.
Benefits - Stipend: $5,000 for Undergraduate Research Interns $7,500 for Masters & PhD Research Interns.

Research Internship - Health Data Science Are you passionate about health data and its potential to drive impactful research that can improve health outcomes? Join our team as a research intern this summer and immerse yourself in the world of Observational Health Data Sciences and Informatics (OHDSI) at Northeastern University. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute directly to community projects focused on advancing open and reproducible science. You will have opportunities to learn R or advance your R programming skills as you contribute to open-source packages used by OHDSI researchers, contribute on an OHDSI software development team, and carry out your own mentored research study using the OMOP Common Data Model and healthcare data accessible at Northeastern University. Work alongside esteemed researchers, gain hands-on experience in big data analysis in the cloud, and play your part in shaping the future of health data research.
About The OHDSI Center at Northeastern The Observational Health Data Sciences and Informatics (OHDSI) Center is Northeastern's hub for global collaborations in large-scale observational health research. The OHDSI Center's goals include founding, creating, and spinning out health-related innovation with real-world utility in life science and medicine domains. Through collaborations with academia, industry, and government worldwide, we generate study results that serve as accurate, reliable guides for healthcare decision making. As part of a central service to Northeastern, the OHDSI Center is focused on achieving a broader and stronger presence for Northeastern as an academic leader in health data sciences worldwide. Educational programs include a master's degree in Real-World Evidence and close collaborations with the Population Health PhD program.
Responsibilities - Learn how to conduct OHDSI research using the OMOP Common data model and OHDSI tools such as ATLAS and HADES.
- Contribute to 1 or 2 in-development R packages maintained by researchers at the Northeastern OHDSI Center.
- Participate in the software development lifecycle for the OHDSI Lab, an on-demand, scalable research lab for conducting real world evidence / health services research within the OHDSI community.
- Identify a research question and conduct a small-scale research study with mentorship from the Northeastern OHDSI team.
- Attend and contribute to OHDSI Center team meetings, research projects, and events as needed.
Qualifications - Currently pursuing a degree in a relevant field (e.g. Statistics, Biostatistics, Bioinformatics, Data Science, Public Health, Epidemiology, Health Informatics, Computer Science, Applied Health Sciences, or related fields)
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- A desire to learn new tools and skills and collaborate with other interns, students, and researchers at the Roux Insitute.
- R programming knowledge and skills are not required, though some programming experience (e.g., R, Python, SQL) will be useful
