Job description

JCC Greater Boston, a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a vibrant and inclusive community, is seeking a Fitness Director to join our team. As a Fitness Director, you will play a pivotal role in promoting health and wellness within our organization. In this position, you will be responsible for overseeing the Fitness operations, developing and implementing fitness programs, as well as managing a team of fitness professionals (personal trainers, pilates instructors, and group fitness instructors). You will collaborate with the management team to ensure the delivery of high-quality fitness services that align with JCC Greater Boston's mission and values. Your role will also involve creating a welcoming and inclusive environment where members feel a sense of belonging and joyfulness

The starting salary for this position is $74,000-78,000 annually. The salary offered will ultimately be determined by the scope of the position, the candidate’s relevant experience, and internal equity. Weekly work schedule will be coordinated with the supervisor based on the needs of the department and the programs that are running.

Requirements

• Oversee the overall operations of the fitness department, including staffing, budgeting, and program development
• Develop and implement fitness programs that cater to the diverse needs and interests of JCC Greater Boston members
• Supervise and support a team of fitness professionals, providing guidance and mentorship
• Oversee Group Fitness, Pilates, Personal Training, Small Group Training and new member onboarding
• Collaborate with other departments to ensure effective coordination of resources and programming
• Ensure the facility and equipment are properly maintained and adhere to safety standards
• Stay informed about industry trends and best practices in fitness and wellness
• Foster a strong sense of community and a welcoming environment that are in line with the JCC Greater Boston’s mission

Supervisory Responsibilities

• Identify key areas of growth and create individual goals for the year to update periodically and align with the expectations of the JCC Performance Management program.
• Conduct supervisory meetings weekly to provide ongoing guidance, direction, and supervision.
• Conduct quarterly meetings to oversee the progress of goal setting and conduct mid-year and end-of-year performance reviews with input from the direct reports.
• Build and maintain a positive working relationship to achieve desired outcomes and the ongoing professional growth of each direct report.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science, Sports Management, or a national Personal Training certificate from an accredited organization required. Preferably: ACE (American Council on Exercise), ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine), NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine), and/or AFFA (Aerobics and Fitness Association of America)
• Must be current in CPR, First Aid, and AED
• Minimum of 4 years of fitness management experience. Personnel management and supervision experience required. Personal Training background and experience are also required.
• Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire staff
• Exceptional knowledge of fitness programming and exercise techniques
• Budget management and financial analysis skills required
• Excellent communication and customer service skills
• Ability to work collaboratively with individuals from diverse backgrounds
• Computer literate Word and Excel

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted at the JCC’s discretion to meet minimum criteria .

Essential Functions

• Able to work well in a busy, dynamic, and sometimes noisy, environment involving multiple tasks and priorities
• Able to lift and carry objects weighing 30-40 pounds
• Able to sit and kneel for periods of time

JCC Greater Boston is a nonprofit organization with roots in earlier Settlement Houses and Young Men’s Hebrew Associations; JCC Greater Boston today offers a wide range of services and program activities throughout the Greater Boston region (~50,000 individuals annually in 98 communities).
