This recruitment is directed towards qualified individuals who are looking for seasonal employment or want to gain this type of experience which would include an opportunity to obtain a commercial driver's license (CDL). Applications will be reviewed upon receipt and this recruitment will close when all vacancies for the current season are filled
The opportunity to be rehired for subsequent seasons will be based on satisfactory performance
This position will not lead to full-time employment, as seasonal employees are required to apply when a full-time job is posted to be considered
(Seasonal employment is limited to 1,500 hours within the designated 12-month period.)
This seasonal position performs a variety of semi-skilled to skilled duties primarily associated with the flushing and cleaning of the Kenosha municipal sewer system
This position will also assist with other tasks for the Water Distribution & Sewer Collection Division or the Engineering Division as needed
A commercial driver's license (CDL) is desired although non-CDL applicants will be considered depending on their work history and availability
Those hired with a CDL will be paid at the rate of $25.78/hour and will be required to participate in the monthly random testing program under the City of Kenosha's Drug & Alcohol Free Workplace Policy
Those hired without a CDL will be paid at a lower wage rate based on experience and will be eligible for the higher rate upon acquiring a CDL
CDL training is available and reimbursement of CDL testing fee may be provided if employee passes the Wisconsin CDL inspection/skills (road) test and remains employed until end of season. The weekly work schedule for this position is projected to be 1st shift (40 hours) Monday through Friday (except for holidays), although hours may be reduced or modified due to inclement weather, equipment malfunction, emergencies or lack of work
The season typically lasts from now to November.
Example of Duties & Responsibilities Under the daily supervision of the Division Director or Supervisor, the following duties are typically performed by this seasonal position (but are not limited to):
- Drives sewer cleaning truck which requires a commercial driver license.
- Removes manhole covers to gain access to sewer system.
- Operates truck mounted and other sewer flushing/cleaning equipment such as rodder, flusher/vacuum, high pressure nozzle, power winches, pumps, etc.
- Unloads debris from truck and refills water supply.
- Reads and interprets route maps; locates sewer lines.
- Inspects sewer service line and reports problems or emergency situations.
- Performs traffic control functions such as placing barricades/cones, signage or other measures to ensure work site safety and to direct/re-route traffic.
- Utilizes proper safety measures and personal protective equipment (PPE) while performing job duties.
- Attends and participates in safety and other KWU mandated training.
- Performs daily and routine vehicle or equipment maintenance (e.g., checks and adjusts fuel/fluid levels and tire pressure, cleans nozzles, greases fittings, adjusts belts or cables, cleans truck cab, hand washes vehicle or drives vehicle through washing station).
- Operates other hand tools used in general carpentry, construction or maintenance.
- Performs general shop maintenance (e.g., sweeps or cleans shop, stocks and organizes equipment and supplies).
- May drive heavy equipment or commercial vehicles to job site or to haul gravel, broken concrete, etc
to fill sites. - May drive non-commercial vehicle to/from job site or to pick up/deliver supplies.
- May assist with concrete or cold patch repair.
- May need to respond to job-site inquiries from citizens regarding work being performed.
- May operate hand held and truck radio.
- Performs other related physical tasks to assist the Distribution, Engineering or another KWU division with the service and maintenance of water and sewer infrastructure.
Requirements General Applicant Requirements: - High school diploma, GED/HSED or equivalent.
- Related work experience preferred which involved physical labor performed outdoors and the use of a variety of hand/power tools; experience in the operation of heavy equipment or commercial vehicle also desired but not required.
- Valid commercial driver license (CDL) which is equivalent to Wisconsin CDL Class B/C with no restriction for air brake operation plus tanker (N) endorsement
Applicants with a regular (Class D) driver's license may also be considered, however if hired, non-CDL applicant will be paid at a lower wage rate unless CDL is obtained. - Good driving record.
- If offered this position, must pass the pre-employment process which includes background/criminal/driving record review, and a post-offer drug screen.
- For employees with CDL, this position also requires participation in the monthly random alcohol and drug testing program.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities : - Knowledge of tools and equipment used in general maintenance and construction.

- Ability and skill in operating hand, mechanical, hydraulic and electric powered tools/equipment related to duties.

Physical Requirements: - Job duties involve walking or standing for extended periods of time on rough or uneven surfaces.
- Job duties require the ability to bend, reach, stoop, kneel and crouch, occasionally working in such positions for an extended period of time.
- Job duties require coordination and manipulation of eyes, hands, and limbs while operating equipment, machinery and tools associated with this occupation and while adhering to exacting standards of depth, grade, dimensions, and contours.
- Job duties involve the regular, and at times sustained, performance of heavier physical tasks which require the lifting or carrying moderately heavy (20-50 pound) items and occasionally very heavy (100 pounds or over) items.
- Job duties may require ascending and descending ladders.
Environmental Requirements: - Tasks are primarily performed outdoors which requires the ability to work under adverse environmental conditions such as: temperature and weather variations, odors, toxic agents, noise, vibrations, wetness, machinery, electrical currents, traffic hazards, and/or dust
Such exposure may cause some discomfort or a risk of injury. - This job may require the incumbent to enter and work in confined spaces (i.e., manholes, trenches, pits)

Wages The wage range for each City job classification is set by a compensation plan approved by the City of Kenosha
The wage rates for some nonrepresented part-time positions are divided into steps; others may only have one set rate of pay
If applicable, employees normally start at the first step (Step 1/A)
Subsequent step increases, if any, are typically awarded at one (1) year intervals and are based upon minimum achievement of a satisfactory evaluation.
Part-time and temporary employees are paid an hourly wage based on their classification.
Library personnel are paid based on a wage schedule set and approved by the Library Board

Salaried employees are paid on the 15th and last day of each month
Hourly employees are paid weekly on Fridays for the hours worked in the previous work week (Sunday - Saturday).
Pension Employees who meet Department of Employee Trust Funds (ETF) eligibility requirements are enrolled in the and are required to contribute one-half of the yearly pension contribution percentage as determined by WRS
The City contributes the other half of the total required amount into the employee's retirement account
The current contribution rate for non-represented (general) employees is 13.1%. The total contribution is calculated based on gross wages paid to the employee for each pay period.
Life Insurance Term group life insurance coverage is provided to employees who participate in the WRS through the Coverage amount is based on annual salary rounded to the next highest $1,000
The premium for Basic Plan coverage is paid by the City for active employees
Additional coverage and/or supplemental levels of coverage are available to employees at their own expense
Coverage becomes effective on the first of the month following thirty (30) days from the date of hire.
FICA Alternative Those employees not expected to meet the hours requirement set by the WRS to qualify for the pension program are required to participate in a FICA Alternative Program
