Job description

The Biotherapeutics and Genetics Medicine department within Discovery Research is seeking a highly motivated senior research scientist to join the in the newly formed Genetic Medicine (GM) group at AbbVie Bioresearch Center (ABC).  The ABC site, based in Worcester, MA, offers a unique setting where GM, Biologics drug discovery, development and manufacturing coexist in one location.  Our team interacts with multidisciplinary groups across AbbVie focused on developing therapies for Virology, Immunology, Neurology, Ophthalmology and Oncology diseases. 

As an integral member of the GM team this individual will independently research extensive bioinformatics and RNA design . The successful candidate is expected to bring in new technologies for RNA platform development and lead the effort of mRNA drug design, screening, and evaluation. As one of the key team members this individual will work with scientists across different functional groups and different therapeutic areas to  discover and develop next generation biologics through interrogation of mRNA. The candidate will need to have a proven ability to manage internal and external collaborations as well as excellent verbal and written skills and the ability to clearly present scientific concepts and results for scientific and non-scientific leaders.

Key Responsibilities:

· Lead efforts on optimization of mRNA drugs by sequence engineering and high-throughput screening.

· Assess emerging technologies to advance the RNA platform and to support multiple projects.

· Develop RNA purification, characterization, and analytical methods to generate therapeutic grade material for in vitro and in vivo studies.

· Mentor research associates on experimental design, troubleshooting, assay optimization and data interpretation as needed.

· Present research progress internally and externally and write study reports.

· Work closely with cross-functional team members and simultaneously demonstrate leadership by advising and sharing knowledge and expert opinions with peers and senior management.

· Contribute to research that leads to peer-reviewed publications, reports, and external presentations.

Key Qualifications:

· PhD in chemical biology, molecular biology, or related disciplines with 0-4 years of mRNA therapy experience or Bachelors with typically 10-12 years of experience or Masters with typically 8-10 years of experience.

· Strong knowledge of nucleic acid chemistry, RNA modifications, RNA synthesis, purification and characterization.

· Strong RNA biology knowledge including genetic element (UTRs, codon, structure, IRES) optimization for enhanced protein translation.

· Deep understanding of applications and technical challenges beyond mRNA therapeutic modality (circular RNA, self-amplifying RNA etc.).

· Thorough knowledge of working with high-throughput screening with enthusiasm in incorporation of automated liquid handlers in lab workflows.

· Demonstrated hands-on experience in purification methodologies by chromatography, such as the AKTA FPLC system and HPLC systems.

· Familiarity with RNA analytic methodologies, such as capillary electrophoresis and mass spectrometry.

· Self-motivated, hard-working, detail-oriented, resourceful, and able to work in a fast-paced team environment with demonstrated problem-solving and perseverance skills.

· High-quality written and oral communication skills and the ability to excel in a collaborative environment.
