We are currently in search of a Development and Communications Associate for a Veterans' Housing Organization. The position is in-person based in Oakland, CA This is a temporary to hire, full-time assignment.

SCHEDULE: Full-time; 40 hours/week


DURATION: Temporary to Hire


HOURLY PAY: $30.00-$32.00/hour

The Development and Communications Associate is integral to achieving the fundraising and fund development goals of the organization and building support that will further the organization's mission of helping homeless veterans and individuals living in encampments, and emergency, transitional, and permanent supportive housing.


The Development and Communications Associate is organized, personable, and self-directed with strong administrative skills. With guidance and supervision, the Development Associate will be responsible for entering data into a Salesforce (CRM) database management, professional correspondence including donor acknowledgment letters, accepting and recording in-kind donations, writing frequent social media posts and quarterly newsletter articles, and other fundraising-related writing and administrative tasks. Production of basic marketing materials such as flyers, annual reports, and contents of presentation folders is another job function for which some knowledge of Microsoft Publisher, Canva, or other graphic design programs is helpful.


The Development Associate, with guidance and supervision, will learn to prepare grant applications and grant reports. The position is expected to manage smaller grant programs by engaging with program staff working on grant-funded programs, learning program specifics, and understanding the goals and deliverables in order to report on the grant and program to funders as well as for organizational reporting and evaluation. This will involve spending time at various program sites and engaging with case managers and/or site staff to gain an in-depth understanding of each grant and program.



Our Ideal Candidate:


· Strong verbal and written communication skills.


· Strong proficiency in Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel as well as CRM/Database experience, (Salesforce a plus).


· Familiarity with Microsoft Publisher, Canva, and/or other basic graphic design programs.


· Familiarity with basic office skills: copying, scanning, express and regular US mail, etc.


· Exceptional attention to detail with excellent organizational skills and a high level of ethics, integrity, and diplomacy.


· Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects, follow through, and meet deadlines whether working independently or as part of a cross-departmental team.


· Ability to work under pressure while maintaining a positive attitude.


· Self-starter with strong critical thinking skills, adaptive, solutions-oriented, and creative problem-solver, with the ability to take initiative on assigned projects, work independently, and identify and provide solutions.


· Willingness to seek guidance and clarification when needed in order to continue to move assigned tasks forward to completion in a timely manner.


· Must have exceptional, authentic, and professional interpersonal skills (tactful, diplomatic, empathetic) for interaction with funders, fellow staff, clients, volunteers, and the general public.


· Must be open to working with individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences regardless of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or disability.


· Commitment to nonprofit service with an interest in homelessness and affordable housing.


· Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience.


· 2 years' experience as an administrative professional, or in a related field (i.e., customer service, database management, and/or communications).


· Compliance with all State and County Public Health orders on COVID-19 vaccinations and boosters.


How You Will Spend Your Day:


· Managing the Constituent Resource Management (CRM) donor database.


· Enter and update constituent (donor and volunteer) information to ensure data integrity and accurate reporting.


· Solicit for donations of goods and in-kind support as needed.


· Respond to donation inquiries via phone and email.


· Work with the Director to prepare, launch, and manage an annual holiday-giving campaign.


· Assist with the execution of the donor stewardship plan to ensure that appropriate acknowledgment and recognition are provided in a timely manner.


· Receive and process monetary and in-kind donations in coordination with finance staff


· Generate and distribute transaction reports to finance for reconciliation.


· Prepare information packets, flyers, display materials, and other presentation materials for donors and prospects.


· Prepare quarterly e-mail newsletters using an existing template and recipient list, this includes interviewing staff and/or clients and taking photos as needed for content, as well as designing look and ensuring proper functionality of each newsletter.


· Update content on the organization's website as directed.


· Write and post social media posts (Facebook, X/Twitter, LinkedIn) as needed.


· Collect and organize client stories, testimonials, and photos for use in fundraising and marketing materials.


· Assist with prospect research and qualification for potential funders and grantors.


· Work with program staff to write small (under $100,000) grant applications and manage grant process (reporting, etc.) when an award has been made.


· Support Development Director with larger grant applications and grant reports


· Create spreadsheets and reports as needed for budgeting and tracking purposes.


· Help coordinate volunteer events with local corporate and community groups.


· Staff outreach table at street fairs, resource fairs, and other local events


· Represent the organization in a courteous and professional manner when dealing with all external organizations, stakeholders, and members of the public.


· Perform general office tasks and other duties assigned by the supervisor.
