Job description
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as Scientific Engagement Manager for PNI. The Scientific Engagement Manager is an integral part of the administrative team overseeing and administering the scientific communication, training, and scientific community engagement areas of the Institute’s mission, as well as supporting its grant/fundraising efforts. The Scientific Engagement Manager reports directly to the Assistant Director.
Scientific Communications
Lead internal and external communication efforts for the Neuroscience Institute in partnership with the Director, Assistant Director, and the Office of Communications. Ensure that important achievements, research discoveries, and events are communicated to the appropriate scientific and public audiences with the goal of raising the profile of PNI as an integrated, world-class research and educational organization.
- Conceptualize, write, and edit scientific and informational content for the department’s website, social media, and other publications.
- Manage overall communications strategies for the department, including web, social media, publications, and video. Liaise with the Office of Communications to highlight and promote achievements, research discoveries, and large events through all appropriate channels.
- Ensure that publications, news, faculty, and training information on the website are updated regularly. Identify new content to reflect new programs and initiatives.
- Respond to media inquiries, generate contacts with external media to publicize research, and assist with event publicity, editorial support, and outreach. Manage overall communications efforts in line with departmental research and teaching mission.
- Oversee the detailed organization for all PNI scientific events aimed at communicating science, such as the Annual Retreat and high-profile Institute-sponsored ad hoc events.
- Design and distribute the Institute’s internal newsletter twice a year.
- Provide expertise and assistance to faculty for writing grants for institutional grant support, particularly the T32 training grant. Serve as the project leader for progress reports and new proposals for government and donor support, including developing new content to showcase the Institute to existing and prospective donors.
- Provide expertise and assistance to graduate students in grant writing for government and foundation support.
Training programs
Undergraduate Students:
- Oversee the Princeton Neuroscience Institute Summer Undergraduate Research program and NSF REU program. Coordinate the application process, develop programing that supports the students and mentors, oversee HR process in collaboration with PNI admin team, and manage the budget for program. Track and monitor progress of former interns, building cohorts for future networking events.
Postdoctoral Program:
- Develop new programming aimed at preparing postdoctoral fellows for future careers.
- Develop new methods for tracking and reporting on postdoctoral fellow progress, accomplishments, and future career placement.
- Coordinate with the Princeton Postdoctoral Office to leverage resources.
- Identify new sources of funding for postdoctoral fellows.
Outreach
Direct a public outreach program, with a year-round portfolio of events and activities, that enhances the public profile of the PNI and creates advanced opportunities for training of graduate students and postdocs.
- Work with the Associate Director of Science Outreach to develop an informal education program that brings neuroscience into NJ classrooms. Provide volunteer graduate students, postdocs, and faculty members with teaching and leadership opportunities.
- Lead student, postdoc, and faculty volunteers in developing content for classroom visits and supervise visits as needed.
- Lead PNI's participation in annual Brain Awareness Week activities. Apply for funding to support Brain Awareness week activities. Events are targeted at children, families, adults, and older adults to reach as many members of the community as possible.
- Maintain the outreach program’s budget, volunteer lists, and public contacts.
- Create collaborations across the Princeton and broader NJ communities, between the Princeton Neuroscience Institute and other outreach organizations.
Essential Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree required; PhD preferred. Must be in Neuroscience or a related scientific discipline.
- Scientific background required, as scientific understanding is needed for many aspects of the position.
- Excellent communication skills in listening, writing, and speaking.
- Fluency in the use of the following (or similar) software packages is a prerequisite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, G Suite, and Outlook.
- Ability to work well under pressure and in conjunction with faculty members, students, and staff.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 1+ years’ experience working in higher education.
- 1+ years’ experience in grant writing or reviewing for government or foundation grants.
- 1+ years’ experience working in a science-related field.
