Job description

The Delaware Thoroughbred Racing Commission is accepting resumes for employment for Commission Veterinarian. This employee examines horses in the morning on rounds and on the race track during the afternoon.

Duties of the Commission Veterinarian include but not limited to:

• The Commission Veterinarian observes horses during training, conducts pre-race examinations on horses scheduled to race and helps maintain commission files documenting examination history of horses running at Delaware Park.
• Observe horses running on the racetrack during the afternoon and attend injured horses if necessary; In the event of an injury, immediately make an assessment and stabilize the horse if possible. Help load the horse in ambulance and attend while horse is transported to its barn.
• Complete an examination of each horse scheduled to run in the day’s races and recommend scratching a horse if unsound, injured, or ill.
• Help maintain commission files documenting history of horses running at Delaware Park
• Stay informed and up to date regarding safety and welfare issues affecting horses in the industry and veterinary practices.
• Collaborate with Safety Steward and other regulatory boards to ensure the rules and regulations are upheld.
• Work with the State Department of Agriculture and the private practitioners in the control of communicable equine diseases, insect control, and sanitary conditions in the barn area.
• Work horses off the veterinarian’s list
• If requested attend Racing Commission meetings to provide veterinarian expertise and input as requested by officials that represent the Commission at hearings involving irregularities, providing testimony as required.

Qualifications:

DVM or VMD degree.

Ability to become licensed by the Delaware Veterinary Board.

At least 2 years of experience in Equine Practice or equivalent.

Excellent administration skills; Excellent interpersonal skills; ethical, honest, and professional qualities.

Able to be firm on decisions.

Salary and medical benefit package are competitive with the Mid-Atlantic region.

This position is not pension eligible and there is no paid leave.

Responsibility time frame – March – October with possibility of extension in off season, to be determined.
