Temporary (6 month) Full Time

Must Reside in Western Los Angeles or Santa Barbara

The University Council – American Federation of Teachers Local 1474 is a statewide Council of nine Chapters representing approximately 7000 Librarians and Non-Senate Faculty at the University of California’s ten campuses. We are currently seeking a:

Temporary (6 month) Full Time Field Representative to support our UCLA and UCSB Chapters.

MUST RESIDE IN western Los Angeles or Santa Barbara.

Desired Start Date: April 22, 2024.
Anticipated interview dates: March 25 - April 5.

Field Representative Responsibilities: The Field Representative will report to the statewide Executive Director, while working closely with the UC-AFT President and the UCLA and UCSB Chapter Executive Boards. The Field Representative will be primarily responsible for organizing and will have grievance and representation responsibilities.

In addition to member and non-member outreach and leadership development, the Field Representative will assist the Executive Director and Chapter leaders with a variety of tasks such as communicating information to the Chapter via email, websites and social media, updating a membership database, handling grievance intake and processing.

Desired Qualifications:

• Significant organizing experience, preferable in higher education
• Ability to develop and implement a successful outreach and membership recruitment plan for the period of the temporary contract.
• Good research, writing, data management, basic literature production and computer skills
• Grievance and representation experience
• Experience in higher education, optimally with librarians and non-tenure-track faculty
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and efficiently in the context of a general plan
• Good interpersonal and group communication skills
• Enthusiasm, flexibility, and a sense of humor

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree
• Two years of union leadership or union staff experience
• California Driver’s license
• Proficient in using Mac computers with PC and mac software. Knowledge of Gmail and other google applications a plus

Salary: Pursuant to UFRE staff collective bargaining agreement; the full-time starting salary is currently $85,973. This position is exempt and requires travel and attendance at evening/weekend events.
