Collections Manager and Registrar

The purpose of the Collections Manager and Registrar role is to provide the highest level of effective and efficient collections management and registration support to the functioning of the Mars Museum and the Mars, Incorporated historic collection and archives.
What are we looking for?
- Experience in cataloging, documentation, and inventory management of artifacts and archival material.
- Experience conducting research on, maintaining records on, and ensuring proper handling and care of artifacts and archival material.
- Experience planning and executing artifact transportation, including knowledge of packing materials and methods.
- Master’s or equivalent graduate degree or at least three years transferable work experience in fields of Collections Management, Museum Registration, or Museum Studies.
What will be your key responsibilities?
- Ensure proper preparation, storage, and re-housing of collections for their long-term preservation.
- Evaluate conservation needs and identify materials for professional conservation.
- Maintain and monitor environmental safety and security of collections, in storage rooms and exhibition areas. Establish emergency preparedness protocols to ensure physical safety of collections.
- Develop and enhance catalog records in the collections management system.
- Oversee digitization initiatives, metadata creation, and implementation of digital asset management.
- Work with the Curator, other staff, and Mars Museum interns to assist in the installation, maintenance, and deinstallation of exhibited artifacts and exhibitions.
- Supervise Mars Museum interns and instruct on proper object handling methods, conservation methods, and other related skills.
- Oversee incoming collections, outgoing loans, and deaccessions, including shipping and recordkeeping.
- Respond to requests for historic materials and other assets. Prepare and share materials and staff events where historic materials are shared.
- Other duties as assigned.
Near Term Activities: Prior to the move into the newly designed McLean facility, assist in organizing and re-housing artifacts and archival materials and preparing them for packing and transportation.
Long Term Activities: Oversee the professional organization, physical safety, and accessibility of the Mars, Incorporated historic collection and archives. Assist in the collection’s development and future growth, including the digitization of materials and collection of born-digital materials. Assist in the development and maintenance of a revitalized Mars Museum website.
