Montgomery College, Rockville Campus, has an immediate need for a Full-time Placement & Learning Advisor for the ESL Noncredit program. The work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 5:00pm. This is a Non- Bargaining Status, Exempt, Grade 27 position. Duties include but are not limited to:
- Advise and counsel students around learning goals, educational opportunities.
- Supervise adjunct faculty during testing and counseling at the beginning of each semester.
- Respond to instructor inquiries and support instructors through course observation and consultation.
- Design, develop and implement placement, counseling, orientation and other materials.
- Assess, counsel, and place students in appropriate courses according to proficiency level and needs.
- Work with staff from other units to facilitate transition of non-credit students into credit coursework.
- Assist students with setting academic and career goals, planning future studies and support their learning through counseling and conflict resolution, track student outcomes.
- Respond to inquiries regarding the College as well as related programs.
- Resolve student complaints, conflicts and other concerns.
- Assist students with financial aid planning.
- Collaborate with other administrators in setting program policies and procedures as well as revising curriculum (course goals, objectives and content).
- Ensure students are eligible for programs based on applicable laws, College policies and funder requirements.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in education, counseling or a related field and any combination of education, training, and experience providing understanding of the field and the ability to perform the duties of the job.
- Two to three years of progressively responsible experience working in higher education or a similar environment.
- Two years of experience in academic advising, counseling, assessing, planning, designing and implementing adult learning strategies for diverse targeted groups or individuals
- Experience providing workshops or instruction.
- Knowledge of the theories and methods of academic and/or career counseling.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of project management.
- Knowledge of the College's policies, mission, vision, and the role of the College within the community, the State of Maryland, and higher education.
- Knowledge of workforce development programs, management, best practices and emerging trends.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office tools, project management software, familiarity with computer hardware and peripheral devices.
- Strong research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship .
Preferred Qualifications:
- MA or substantial postgraduate work in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition or closely related field
- At least three years of experience teaching ESL in a higher Education context
- At least one year of experience learning a second language. Intermediate proficiency in a second language preferred.
- Experience with placement or language proficiency testing
- Experience training and leading faculty.
- Thorough knowledge of second language acquisition, teaching and learning
- Ability to communicate with people with limited proficiency in English
- Skills in counseling and conflict resolution
- Demonstrated strong intercultural communication skills
- Thorough knowledge of US higher education system.
Hiring Range $63,375 to $82,376 annually. Initial salary placement is based on candidate experience and internal equity. Please include a complete resume including all relevant and related work experience.
