Summary:
The Microbiologist I will perform professional and specialized microbiological analytical work and procedures for the isolation, identification, or enumeration of organisms from clinical and environmental specimens, which may include the practice of bacteriology, mycology and parasitology.
Essential Job Functions:
- Record, analyze and interpret laboratory data
- Ensure data is recorded accurately in accordance with established guidelines
- Assist with procedures to collect data, in consultation with activity lead makes adjustments to methods and procedures as appropriate during the course of supporting the general duties within the lab
- Identify and carry out guidelines and regulations related to proper handling and storage of various biological materials
- Participate in AST panel pours Develop project protocols and documents according to QMS guidelines Collaborate with peers to plan and perform laboratory studies and projects Support special studies; help outline study requirements, resources, equipment needs, etc.
- Record quality results in accordance with established procedures and maintain complete, detailed records of all work performed
- Asist with administrative work related to customer requests and laboratory needs
- Prepare, ship and track materials for customers
- Perform tasks that support general laboratory needs (preparation of microbiological media and standard solutions, sterilization of materials)
- Perform microbial characterization (gram stain, phenotypic testing and colonial morphology, use of commercial identification systems (e.g. MALDI-TOF, Vitek)).
- Assist in day to day maintenance in the laboratory; ensure adequate inventory of all the supplies necessary to run the lab efficiently
- Assist with equipment cleaning, maintenance, calibration and general laboratory
housekeeping - Document work in a clear and organized manner
- Perform PCR to determine mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance of bacterial isolates
- Perform antimicrobial susceptibility testing
- Prepare large numbers of aliquoted specimens to be subsequently shipped to customers
- Develop and maintain quality assurance measures to assure that analytical methods are under control
- Conduct and maintain chemical inventory for branch laboratories
- Assist with safety inspections and waste management as a member of the Safety Committee
- Utilize a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) for data entry and other computer operations
- May provide on-going technical guidance, instruction, and training to newly rotated laboratory personnel in the proper performance of routine procedures
- Assist with monitoring of data base files and/or assist in software testing
- Perform quality control testing of in house and commercially prepared media
Necessary Skills and Knowledge:
- Skilled in microbiological aseptic techniques
- Able to work well in a team and to manage a high throughput workload
- Detail oriented with strong documentation skills
- Enthusiastically serves customers and represents the laboratory well professionally
- Must be committed to continuous improvement
- Good verbal & written communication skills
- Highly proficient in using Microsoft Office Tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint, etc.)
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelors Degree in related field OR closely related field with at least 2 years of related experience OR a master’s degree in a related field with 2 years of related experience, or high school diploma/equivalent with at least 8 years of related and demonstrated work experience.
- At least two (2) or more years of experience in microbiology
Preferred Qualifications:
- Masters’ degree in Microbiology, Biology, or related field.
- Laboratory experience preferred
- Antimicrobial susceptibility testing, laboratory microbial identification and isolate work-up is a plus
- Experience handling bacterial and yeast cultures
