THE DEPARTMENT The Center for the Advancement of Faculty Excellence (CAFE) supports a broad and complex array of faculty career, teaching, and scholarly development activities. CAFE collaborates with multiple units and divisions to offer programs and achieve goals. With regard to this position in particular, CAFE provides and maintains facilities, resources, programs, and services that enable faculty to expand their approaches to teaching and learning, particularly enhanced by technology, at Cal Poly Pomona. With a staff of instructional designers, multimedia specialists, and student technology assistants, CAFE offers a variety service to enhance faculty work both face-to-face and online.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - Provide instructional design support for faculty to enhance teaching and learning in all learning environments at Cal Poly Pomona
- Consult with faculty and staff to identify, analyze, and diagnose user needs and develop specifications for appropriate solutions, with accessibility for users with disabilities fundamentally considered
- Assist faculty in selection of appropriate learning technologies
- Work with faculty to design learning materials and activities for the online learning environment
- Evaluate new technologies for their potential to enhance instruction
- Work with subject matter experts and instructional technologists to produce online courses and/or digital learning content when necessary
- Design assessment plans for faculty to monitor the impact of recommended technologies on student learning outcomes
- Develop training materials or opportunities for faculty to support their use of instructional technologies *Provide feedback to faculty regarding course design and implementation
- Evaluate instructional materials for accessibility for users with disabilities and assist faculty in remediating materials.
- Contribute to campus or department initiatives or projects to enhance teaching and learning through effective use of technology
- Coordinate major events and programs for CAFE
- Contribute to developing and delivering training materials.
- Assist in direct faculty support for use of campus learning technologies.
- Apply instructional design expertise to broader initiatives (as compared to individual faculty courses)
- Collaborate with other university departments on broader initiative
- Contribute to assessment of CAFE's programming and activities
- Backup management of the CAFE 'Studio 6' resource, including student technology assistants (ITAs), and backup LMS (Canvas) support for faculty
- Being available for consultation with Instructional Technology Assistants (ITAs) and faculty as needed
- Contributing to hiring, evaluating, training, and if necessary, disciplining and terminating student ITAs
- Train student technology assistants in LMS support and other learning technology support for low-level or repetitive support requests, in methods to create accessible instructional and academic materials, and in methods to remediate non-accessible materials
- As needed, respond to requests for LMS support, with emphasis on faculty support and concentration on non-routine issues, utilizing system administrative privileges necessary to troubleshoot and consult
- As needed, provide consultation to the main Canvas coordinator in CAF
- Maintain and enhance technical, professional, and pedagogical skills through online research, appropriate journals and publications, vendor materials, workshops, conferences, and training
QUALIFICATIONS - A basic foundation of knowledge and skills in technical information systems and application program packages is a prerequisite. This foundation would normally be obtained through a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, educational technology, communications, or related fields, or similar certified coursework in applicable fields of study.
- Foundation knowledge and skills for the Information Technology Consultant, depending on the nature of the position assignment, may include working knowledge of common software application packages, equipment platforms, reference database systems and sources, and training methods and a basic understanding of networks, data communication, and multimedia systems.
- The career level is broad and includes intermediate through senior level positions. Incumbents at this level work relatively independently and possess the experience to be fully proficient in performing most or all of the work assignments defined for their position. Typically, incumbents have acquired the requisite skills and knowledge through a combination of education, training, and progressive work experience to be able to demonstrate competence in independently applying technical judgment to standard and nonstandard applications and systems, solving a wide range of problems, and developing practicable and thorough solutions, and using effective communication and listening skills.
Expertise in providing technical support, troubleshooting, and deployment for client devices, computers, applications, account/access management, and local area networks. Effective communication skills both orally and in writing; demonstrated ability to communicate and assist users at all levels of technical knowledge and understanding. Experience in standard IT client hardware (PCs, Mac, tablets, smartphones) and network protocols (e.g. TCP/IP). Willingness to work with an ethnically diverse and culturally pluralistic student body, faculty, and staff. Excellent customer service skills and values. Ability to use technical judgment and expertise to determine appropriate solutions to meet users' needs. Ability to organize time so that tasks are completed in a timely manner. Ability to educate and deploy staff, learn quickly, interpret and present information clearly and accurately. Ability to move effectively around campus and visit user locations to provide support and resolution for complex problems. Knowledge of and ability to apply campus accessibility standards to all forms, documents, websites, and purchase recommendations.
Preferred Qualifications - Master's degree in instructional design, instructional technology, or a related field
- Two years' experience assisting university of college level faculty develop online, hybrid, and/or Web-enhanced courses.
- Two years of professional experience working with technology applications for education and instruction, which included providing consultative services to others
- Experience developing instructional materials.
- Experience conducting workshops or classes.
- Instructional design principles and methodologies
- Working knowledge of accessibility standards and methods
- Experience assisting post-secondary level faculty develop online or hybrid courses
- Experience developing instructional websites
- Teaching at the university level
- Functional knowledge of learning management systems
- Experience in all phases of the instructional design process
