Wound, ostomy, and continence (WOC) nursing is a multifaceted, evidence-based practice incorporating a unique body of knowledge to provide excellence in prevention, health maintenance, therapeutic intervention, and rehabilitative nursing care to persons with select disorders of the gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and integumentary systems. This complex, interdependent specialty encompasses the care of all patient populations across the continuum of care while providing a pivotal role as educator, researcher, and resource throughout the healthcare community. WOC nursing directs its efforts at improving the quality of life for individuals with wound, ostomy, and continence concerns.A WOC nurse is a Registered Nurse (RN) who holds a Baccalaureate Degree or higher and completes a formal, accredited WOC full-scope or specialty education program. WOC nurses can specialize in wounds, ostomies, or incontinence and provide acute and rehabilitative needs for individuals with select disorders of the gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and integumentary systems. WOC nurses provide direct care to people with abdominal stomas, wounds, fistulas, drains, pressure injuries, and/or continence disorders and can serve as educators, consultants, researchers, or administrators. RN will do Wound Vac application/changes, Compression wrap application/changes, pre-surgical ostomy site marking, post-operative ostomy education, Monthly and quarterly prevalence, wound assessment, diagnosis and treatment supervised by CNS, education for new nurse/PCT, unit-based and PRN as requested and will review and approve specialty bed orders.
Required: Certifications/Licenses/Experience
- Active Compat Registered Nurse (RN) in Indiana or other compact licensure state
- Bachelor degree
- Completion of a WOCN society accredited Education Program or completion of the Experiential Pathway, which requires 50 contact hours or equivalent in college course work post-bachelor's degree, per specialty, within the last five years. In addition, the pathway requires a minimum of 1500 clinical hours completed within the past five years, and 375 of those hours competed within the past year.
- Received certification in the areas of wound, ostomy, and continence upon completion of an accredited WOCN program
