General Description

The GIS Technician I position is responsible for working alongside the newly hired staff members in a dynamic, challenging, and fun environment. This position is an entry level, in-office position without a remote option. This position will work directly with the GIS Manager and GIS team members on several community outreach and real property projects.

Umyuaq Consulting Group, LLC provides community relations, strategic communications, safety outreach, and geographic information systems support for environmental remediation and munitions response projects for government clients.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities:

• Develop and maintain GIS datasets and linkages to various databases.
• Perform basic spatial analysis on data using GIS software.
• Read and interpret source documents, plat maps, property deeds, and legal descriptions.
• Enter required data into a standardized GIS database.
• Generate map documents that are incorporated into community outreach materials.
• Communicate and work alongside GIS staff and other team members with varying short/long-term deliverable schedules.
• Self-perform quality assurance of work product prior to technical review and be open and willing to receive feedback as a learning/growth mechanism.
• Help staff a toll-free call center by way of answering incoming calls.
• Other duties as assigned.

• Ability to work well in a team environment are essential.
• Knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, and techniques used in researching, delineating, mapping, and documenting of real property.
• Ability to perform mathematical calculations and computations of real property.
• Ability in research of land surveys, real estate documents, and other land records.
• Ability to assess and prioritize multiple tasks, projects and demands.
• Ability to operate a personal computer utilizing a variety of business software; and
• Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
• Knowledge of the Spatial Data Standard for Infrastructure and Environment (SDSFIE) concepts.

Measures of Performance:

• Research (10%).
• Data entry and editing in a standardized ArcSDE environment (50%).
• Development of presentation materials and maps (35%).
• Help staff a toll-free call center by way of answering incoming calls (5%).

Required Qualification:

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• Bachelor’s Degree in GIS or related field is required.
• Provide documentation, such as a portfolio, of their work experience as part of the interview process is required.
• Minimum of 1 years worth of relevant experience working in GIS. Experience may be through class assignments, internships, or other employment positions. Must have proven ability to think/work and problem solve independently.
• Experience with GIS and applications (Esri ArcGIS Pro, Arc GIS Desktop), including file management, and data compilation and editing procedures is required.
• Valid driver’s license is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with GIS databases (SDE) and versioning workflows is preferred.
• Experience with basic scripting and programming is preferred.

• Mobility: Must be able to stoop, kneel, reach, walk, lift, grasp, feel, talk, hear, and perform repetitive motions.
• Hearing: Must be able to hear audible safety alarms.
• Visual Acuity: Must be adequate to perform above listed tasks in a safe manner and perform activities such as viewing a computer terminal and extensive reading.
• Lifting: Must be able to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
