General Summary : The purpose of this position is to inspect, test, repair, install and/or maintain various types of electrical systems and equipment in all college facilities; troubleshoot electrical and fire-alarm equipment; maintain adequate inventory of equipment and materials; inspect work of outside contractors and other college electricians; determine materials and/or equipment necessary for specific jobs including recommending whether or not to use outside contractors; and writes technical specifications for bids on electrical equipment.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Inspects, tests, repairs, installs and/or maintains various types of electrical systems and equipment by operating the appropriate equipment and tools to ensure proper maintenance and functioning of necessary equipment.
- Maintains an adequate inventory of equipment and materials by contacting vendors for prices, ordering equipment and materials through purchase request forms, and writing technical specifications for equipment purchases as necessary.
- Inspects the work of outside contractors to ensure compliance with safety codes and regulations.
- Determines on-the-job procedure changes by consulting with Facilities Staff, outside contractors and engineers to obtain technical advice and to coordinate and complete work projects.
- Troubleshoots electrical and related equipment by using necessary equipment and reading schematics, diagrams and outlines to identify and correct operational problems.
- Determines acceptable quality of materials and/or equipment necessary for a job to ensure that completed work projects comply with specifications.
- Performs related duties such as reviewing technical data to keep abreast of developments in the field; resetting fire alarms systems; determine the need to shut off electrical power in an emergency; drafting schematics, diagrams and outlines; and providing on-the-job training.
- Attends meetings, seminars, workshops, etc., to gather and exchange information.
- Maintains reports on work progress and work forecasts, preventive maintenance schedules, repairs information, costs and times involved with various activities.
- Routinely assists in the inspection of mechanical equipment and its associated operating and control components for all the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems at the college.
- Assists other tradespeople when required during urgent repair situations and during emergencies such as plumbing leaks, sprinkler problems and natural gas leaks.
- Routinely informs Facilities staff of safety issues of all types beyond those of an electrical nature.
- Operates computerized energy management systems used to control the heating and cooling of college buildings.
- Assumes significant responsibility for the college electrical, fire alarm and security lighting systems and their associated equipment when problems develop.
- Serves as a first response team member for all types of urgent problems and emergencies.
- Perform standby duty, and report to campus after hours, as necessary, to respond to emergencies and effectuate necessary repairs.
- Other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements: - Applicant must have at least one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience as a Licensed Journeyman or Master Electrician.
- Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Journeyman or Master Electrician's License issued by the State Examiners of Electricians.
- Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class 3 Motor Vehicle Operator's License
- Experience in Fire Alarm systems
- An aptitude for solving basic electrical issues
- Experience with equity-minded work and/or understanding of individuals of diverse identities such as race, ethnicity, socioeconomic level, sexual orientation, veterans, and individuals with different academic preparation levels and varying physical and learning abilities.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of:
- state and local electrical codes
- principles and theory of electricity
- basic algebra and arithmetic
- the types and uses of small hand tools used in electrical practice such as pliers, screwdrivers, etc
- the types and uses of equipment including testing equipment used in electrical work
- safety practices and precautions observed in the electrical trade
- inspection techniques used in the electrical trade
- the types and uses of hand held power tools such as drills, etc
- the methods and techniques of testing fire alarm systems
- the procedures and methods followed in the installation of fire alarm systems
- Skill in: the use of precision measuring equipment, gauges and instrumentation used in electrical work
- Ability to: lift and carry heavy objects; understand, explain and apply the laws, rules and regulations governing assigned unit activities; read and interpret documents such as electrical plans, schematics, drawings, etc; install, maintain and repair electrical wiring systems and equipment; detect and locate causes of electrical failure or breakdown of equipment.
