Job description

Position Summary

The Medicinal Chemistry Facility is seeking a highly motivated and productive medicinal chemist to conduct daily research on exciting pilot projects for early- and mid-stage MSU drug discovery programs and focus particularly on the discovery and development of new anticancer agents. This individual will advance their medicinal chemistry expertise in a “Team Science” atmosphere with scientists of diverse expertise.   The medicinal chemistry facility provides HTS triage, medicinal chemistry design, chemical biology, scale-up for in vivo studies  and ADME support for ongoing programs.  This individual will participate and will be trained in each of these activities.  Successful candidates will report to the facility director, Dr. Edmund Ellsworth, and have regular interactions with Dr. Charles Hong, Chair of the MSU department of medicine.
Key functions:
• Apply, develop, and execute strategies in multi-step organic synthesis and purification of high-quality target molecules for biological screening.  
• Adapt new technologies and solutions to support program studies. 
• Work closely with medicinal chemistry facility director and other project team members in the design, syntheses, and optimization of compounds with improved potency, selectivity, together with improved ADME properties.
• Prioritize synthetic chemistry efforts to ensure timeline adherence and project alignment to meet the medicinal chemistry facility, project and university goals.
• Assist in the preparation of formal reports to project team, patents, publications, and project planning.

This position is for one year with potential for renewal.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired through completion of one or two years of post-bachelor degree work, such as a Master's in the specific field of research employment; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in research methodologies, writing reports, supervision, software, data interpretation and handling in area related to research being performed; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and may require special licensing or certification in the field related to the area of employment.

Desired Qualifications

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired through completion of two years or more of post-bachelor’s degree work, such as a Master’s in the specific field of research employment; one to three years of related and with progressively with evidence of greater responsibility or expansive work experience in overseeing research projects and laboratory operations or the completion of a Ph.D. degree in organic chemistry with experience in the preparation of complex molecules. Additionally, the operation and maintenance of a variety of laboratory equipment, performing specialized and difficult analytical and research techniques, and designing research experiments would be considered a plus.
