POSITION DESCRIPTION FOR:
MECHANIC

BASIC FUNCTION:
A Transit Mechanic in the maintenance group performs routine maintenance on equipment and buildings and grounds and determinates when and what kind of maintenance is needed. Conducts tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance. Installs equipment, engines, transmissions, hoses, batteries, tires, brakes, HVAC, wiring etc. or programs to meet specifications. Watches gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure equipment is working properly. Service, repairs, adjusts, and test machines devices, moving parts, and equipment that operate primary on the basis of mechanical principles. Inspects equipment, building and structures, etc. of material to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects. Analyzes information and evaluate results to choose the best solution and solve problems.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Repairs transit and paratransit buses, trucks, automobiles and related equipment to ensure safe operation of equipment.
- Occasionally operates forklift, bobcat, snow plows, dump trucks, and tow truck.
- Conducts general buildings and grounds, and equipment inspections of building structure, shop air compressors, bench grinders, body shop equipment, boiler room, brake lathes, bus in-ground lifts, bus wash rack, facility lights, floor scrubbers, lawn mowers, trimmers, snow blowers, pressure washers, tire shop equipment, welding equipment and vacuum system on a monthly basis and repair defects.
- Maintains work orders, repair log, defect cards, yard sheet and other statistical information relative to repair work.
- Starts buses to prepare for morning pullout; operates all wheelchair lifts for performance evaluation and repairs.
- Inspects, troubleshoots, adjusts and repairs/replaces basic systems including, but not limited to, Hybrid Systems, electrical, brakes, suspension, HVAC, steering, tires, air system, body panels interior/exterior, seat cushions/inserts, ad racks, engine and transmission components and electronics, and wheelchair/ramp equipment.
- Coordinates set up of emergency road calls and repairs.
- Performs tow truck operations when necessary.
- Inspect, test, and listen to defective equipment to diagnose malfunctions, using test instruments such as handheld scan tools, laptops, and pressure gauges.
- Performs preventive maintenance on transit buses, paratransit buses and service vehicles.
- Troubleshoots, disassembles, and overhauls diesel engines, transmissions, pumps, and generators.
- Cleans own work area after each job is completed.

PHYSICAL AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Must be able to pass DOT physical, which is a requirement for CDL Class A license, and demonstrate ability to do the following:
- Heavy work with exertion of up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Physical activity includes, but is not limited to: lifting, pushing, pulling parts on vehicles; crouching, kneeling, stooping to work on brakes and other vehicle parts; hearing to detect engine noises; reaching below waist, waist to shoulder and above shoulder to repair vehicles; rolling tires; turning screws and bolts; using chisels, pliers, ratchets, screwdriver, and other tools; utilizing repetitive movements to turn screws and bolts, snow shoveling, hooking up wrecker to bus both by hooks and tow bar (150lbs), jarring and vibrations of tire gun, plowing of snow and bobcat use. Uses hoist, jacks and related mechanical equipment to lift and align heavy parts such as motors, tires and related equipment.
- Must be able to pass all medical exams, drug and background checks (including criminal).
- Must submit to post offer pre-employment drug screen and participate in ongoing random drug and alcohol testing program. This is a safety sensitive position.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- High School Graduate or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
- Five years experience.
- Must be able to diagnose, troubleshoot and repair the most difficult of all vehicle and equipment service.
- Must be able to teach less senior mechanics as time permits, more complex repair techniques.
- Substitution of any equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to meet the requirements will be up to the discretion of the Maintenance Manager.
- Must possess or acquire within 6 months a valid Commercial Driver's license Class "A", with Passenger Combination endorsements, and maintain a good driving record.
- Must possess own required tools.
- Must have or acquire within 6 month the following certifications T1, T2, T3, T4, T5, T6, T7, and T8, or H1, H2, H3, H4, H5, H6, H7, and H8, from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellent (ASE). In lieu of ASE certifications, Management may accept ten (10) years of documented qualifications, relevant work experience, or in-house experience.
- Understand and practice all safety rules, PPE, and OSHA regulations.
- Establish and maintain effective working relations with co-workers.
Environment Conditions
- Duties will be performed indoors, outdoors and in all weather conditions.
- Must be able to withstand environmental conditions such as dirt, dust, oil, gasoline, diesel, grease, fumes, wetness, and humidity.
Compensation
This is a position subject to the terms of a collective bargaining agreement.
Compensation is reflective of verified years of experience.
