Job description
Garrison Forest School is seeking a creative and dynamic individual to join the Upper School Academic Resource Center as an Interim Learning Specialist, to begin immediately and go through the end of the 2023-2024 school year. Ideal candidates will be interested in preparing young women to live and work in a global and multicultural society and possess strong organizational skills, flexibility, and an ability to build positive, constructive relationships with students. Ability to work in a diverse community and lead in an equitable manner are essential. The candidate will be joining a community of collegial faculty members and reporting to the Director of the Upper School Academic Resource Center and working closely with the Upper School Counselor, and teachers across disciplines in the Upper School to support all students in developing “learning that sticks.”
Duties and Responsibilities:
- teaching 9th-grade study skills classes
- working with small groups and individual students on executive function, study skills, writing, mathematics, science and other subject-specific support
- coordinating the academic mentoring program
- facilitating the Upper School testing center
- implementing accommodations for students with learning differences
- partnering with families to discuss student needs and progress
- collaborating with classroom teachers to develop teaching and learning strategies for a wide range of learning profiles
The ideal candidate should:
- possess strong communication skills, a patient and thorough understanding of adolescence, and the ability to effectively collaborate with colleagues and parents of diverse backgrounds
- demonstrate a commitment to supporting diversity and multicultural educational practices
- maintain knowledge of current best practices and educational trends, including technological integration
- possess strong background in supporting students in mathematics and science
- create a secure and stimulating environment in which students grow in both autonomy and the ability to work and interact together
- take responsibility for being a role model by maintaining an environment that fosters respect among students and colleagues
Qualifications:
- B.A. degree or equivalent – Master’s degree desirable
- Understanding of common learning disabilities
- Prior experience working with adolescents in an academic setting
