This is a 100% Limited Appointment. This appointment may be extended or converted to career status based on the needs and funding of the department.
This is a 100% limited position anticipated to last no longer than six (6) months. However, if funding is available, this position may be extended.
The Division of Biological Sciences is comprised of four academic sections, (Cell and Developmental Biology, Ecology Behavior and Evolution, Molecular Biology, and Neurobiology) which reflect broad foci in faculty research and in the academic programs offered by the Division. Each section is headed by a Chair who works individually to represent their section, and works collaboratively as a member of the Division's Council of Chairs (COC) on those Divisional concerns which cross the boundaries of section governance. The Division has 90 faculty FTE and approximately 5000 undergraduate students in 8 majors, with annual enrollments of approximately 30,000.
Under general supervision, the incumbent will work as the Research Project Manager in collaboration with the Principal Investigator and in conjunction with the group's research associates, making innovative contributions pertaining to lab and/or research procedures aimed at understanding developmental patterning using Drosophilia as a model to understand human disease processes. Major responsibilities include: act as work lead for the Postdocs, researchers, and staff, overseeing and conducting experiments utilizing Active Genetics CRISPR/Cas9 technology through routine biochemistry and molecular biology procedures such as DNA isolation, recombination-based cDNA cloning, bacterial transformation and growth, PCR, Gibson assembly, constructing Copycat elements,and trans-complementing MCRs and ERACRs. In addition, when appropriate, the incumbent will assist in the preparation of scientific manuscripts based on experiments performed and participate in laboratory meetings and journal discussions.
Strong theoretical and practical knowledge of biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology and genetics, including relevant laboratory techniques. PhD degree in related field preferred but not required.
Experience with sectioning, processing, and analyzing histological samples by confocal microscopy.
Independent experimental experience using Drosophila as a research model.
Demonstrated experience in experimental design and analysis, with limited input from the PI working with molecular biology and protein techniques such as DNA cloning and Restriction cloning, bacterial transformation, protein gel electrophoresis, and Western blotting
Expertise in the preparation of scientific reagents including common buffers and stock solutions
Demonstrated experience using CRIPSR/Cas9 technology, speficically in the context of Dropsophila Genome and Active Genetics.
Extensive knowledge of microdissection and staining of tissue samples, particularly with Drosophilia Tissue, including fluorescent and colorimetric immunostaining.
Experimental experience with the Gibson assembly of complex vectors (CopyCats, transcomplementing MCRs and ERACRs).
Proven ability to hire academics, staff and students and direct/oversee their work in the lab.
Ability to train others in various lab techniques and procedures (safety precautions, preparation of media, dishwashing, equipment usage. laboratory maintenance, etc.).
Strong demonstrated knowledge and experience with basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, micro-pipettes, biosafety cabinets, incubators, autoclaves, balances, pH meters, and microscopes
Excellent interpersonal communication skills to interact well with others to facilitate communication about lab requirements including the ability to discuss and understand day-to-day laboratory affairs, research plans, results and ideas with PI and other lab personnel in a constructive, professional and pleasant manner.
Excellent organizational skills including the ability to keep clear and accurate records, organize a varied workload, follow written and oral protocols and give oral presentations on the progress of research in lab meetings. Proven ability to prioritize and schedule experiments and duties to maximize efficiency.
Proven ability to maintain confidentiality in matters related to work.
Strong demonstrated skill in maintaining multiple fly stocks of different species.
Proven ability to develop, follow and troubleshoot established lab protocols and lab procedures with direction from PI.
Familiarity with Apple and PC computers
