Job description

Min Rate = $45.04 / Max Rate = $66.66 *Placement is in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Units Agreement.

 

Under general supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor, Anatomic Pahtology & LIS, assists in surgical and autopsy pathology as required. Secures and prepares tissue for gross dissection and microscopic examination and study. Candidates who are licensed cytotechnologists will perform cytological examinations to the level of their experience. Candidates who are licensed medical technologists will perform moderately complex and complex testing as required.

Pathology Assistant

Assist in the preparation and performance of human surgical specimen dissection, including:

  1. Reviews Surgical Pathology requisitions to assure adequate history and obtains additional information when necessary.
  2. Provides gross description and dissection of specimens. Selects and prepares representative tissue sections for microscopic examination.
  3. Selects tissue and assures proper fixation and transport of specimens for special studies (e.g., flow cytometry).
  4. Assumes microtomy, routine staining and special stain duties as required. Completes work consistently within acceptable time limit
  5. Observes professional discretion with patient information.
  6. Attends appropriate training / educational programs of the Laboratory and participates in inservice programs of the department.
  7. Follows all established Quarterly Assurance policies as outlined in the department manuals.

Assist in the preparation and performance of human post-mortem exams, including:

  1. Ascertain proper legal authorization for autopsy as directed by pathologist(s).
  2. Retrieval of patient’s chart and other pertinent data for review with the pathologist(s).
  3. Confers with the pathologist(s) to identify the special techniques and procedures that will be necessary (e.g., histochemical, immunofluorescence, toxicological, viral or electron microscopic studies, cultures, smears, etc.) and notifies all personnel directly involved.
  4. Notification of the physician in charge, the funeral home, and all other authorities prior to beginning the dissection; coordination of special request for specimen sampling (e.g., organ transplantation team, research, etc.).
  5. Performing postmortem examinations which may include: external examinations, in situ organ inspections, evisceration, dissection and dictation or recording of data such as organ weights, presence of body fluids, etc., and gross anatomic findings.
  6. Selecting, preparing and submitting appropriate gross tissue sections for special studies.
  7. Obtaining biological specimens such as blood, tissue and toxicological material, for studies including cytometry, image analysis, immunohistochemistry, etc., and performing special procedures such as coronary artery perfusion, central nervous system perfusion, enucleation, inner ear bone dissection, spinal cord removal, etc
  8. Photographing the body, organs, microscopic slides and other pertinent materials.
  9. Gathering and organizing clinical information and data pertinent to the preparation of the preliminary summarization of the clinical history.
  10. Performing duties related to administrative maintenance of anatomic pathology protocols; photographic and microscopic slides and assuring completion of coding.

Cytotechnologist N/A

Performs cytological and clinical procedures and examinations, including:

  1. Processes samples for gynecological and non-gynecological examination.
  2. Reads designated slides for quality (second) review.
  3. Performs stain quality control and maintains quality control and maintenance records.
  4. Screens gynecological and non-gynecological slides.
  5. Recommends and performs validations for updated cytological processes and clinical processes in the Anatomic Pathology laboratory.
  6. Participates in accrediting agency proficiency testing in cytology.
  7. Performs clinical testing in the Anatomic Pathology laboratory.
  8. Acts as a resource to junior cytotechnologists.
  9. Other duties as assigned.

Medical Technologist N/A

  1. With regard to the tasks listed below, the employee demonstrates proficiency and competence, performs clinical and proficiency tests under the direct supervision of a NYSDOH qualified Technologist, Supervisor or Director, performs quality control procedures as required, evaluates QC results before proceeding with clinical testing, records all QC results and takes necessary corrective action.
  1. Performs all assigned routine scheduled equipment maintenance.

  1. Bachelor's Degree
  2. Must meet current New York State Requirements for registration or licensure.
  3. Certification as Pathologist’s Assistant by the American Association of Pathologists Assistants preferred. Requires minimum of (1) year training in Anatomic Pathology dissection techniques.
  4. Candidates who are qualified Cytotechnologists, Medical Technologists or Histotechnologists will maintain current NYS licensure in those areas.

 

As applicable, the individual has training/competency in attending to the special needs and/or behaviors appropriate to the age of the patients for which care is being provided.
