Job description
The Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Senior Specialist (Senior Specialist) will collaborate with colleagues in Human Resources and across campus to support the advancement of employee-focused institutional and departmental DEI goals. The Senior Specialist will directly interact with senior leaders to customize and implement unit DEI plans and initiatives aligned with Princeton's DEI strategy. They will be responsible for executing DEI data reviews, identifying trends, and developing strategies customized to meet the needs of specific units. The Senior Specialist will assist units in facilitating DEI committees and developing DEI learning paths. The Senior Specialist will serve as a resource and a contact for units on a broad range of DEI matters. They will provide consultative support to a wide range of employees from diverse cultural and identity groups, with varying degrees of DEI subject matter knowledge, and among all types of positions within the institution. Therefore, candidates should have knowledge and experience in DEI, DEI data analysis, familiarity with workplace dynamics and functions, and strong coaching skills.
Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Unit Planning and Support
- Build relationships with senior unit leaders to embed DEI into talent processes
- Analyze, leverage, and present DEI data to guide the development of customized DEI plans
- Develop and track measures of progress and success
- Evaluate and provide guidance on equitable and inclusive talent processes and practices regarding performance management, giving and receiving feedback, on-boarding, sponsorship, interviewing skills, etc.
- Identify connections between unit climate/practices and HR DEI learning curriculum to develop learning paths to increase capability for employees and further unit DEI goals
- Partner with talent acquisition to implement strategies to develop more diverse talent pipelines and mitigate bias in the candidate life cycle
- Create and deliver DEI presentations and workshops to unit staff
Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Unit Committees
- Facilitate the creation and sustainability of DEI unit committees
- Attend unit DEI committees to lead and offer support for employee-focused DEI actions
- Research and share workplace DEI best practices and current trends
- Develop, recommend, and execute creative strategies to foster DEI and engagement, that connect DEI to the work of the unit
- Drive accountability to create and manage milestones and metrics
- Lead a series of DEI connection events for committee leaders
Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Development and Support
- Oversee the coordination of DEI professional programming for staff in collaboration with the Director of DEI, Learning & Development, and other campus partners
- Customize and share appropriate tools and evaluations following programs with campus partners
- Attend and contribute to DEI practitioner opportunities across campus, bringing learning back to DEI team and clients
- Develop external alliances with local institutions and other organizations focused on DEI
- Assist with ad hoc reports, presentations, and projects as needed
- Contribute to other programs such as manager development and staff learning events that help us recruit, develop, and retain talent
- Develop needed resources in conjunction with the roll-out of the climate assessment results and at other times as the need arises
Essential qualifications :
- Five or more years of relevant experience with the key functions of this role (i.e., human resources, project management, resource development, program coordination, outreach and visibility, coaching, and DEI teamwork)
- Ability to influence without authority and work through change processes with empathy; collaborate effectively with colleagues, problem-solve, and work independently with good judgment about when to seek direction, as well as manage multiple projects and competing priorities simultaneously
- Demonstrated knowledge of DEI topics, such as identity (i.e., race, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, class, disability, faith, and age), intersectionality, privilege and power, unconscious bias, micro-aggressions, improving climate, and intergroup and intra-group dynamics and dialogue. This knowledge should include current research, national trends, and theoretical models.
- Comfortable with conflict and able to manage difficult conversations in programmatic and meeting contexts, as well as experience creating welcoming spaces to “call in” people as a way of educating them about a wide range of DEI topics
- Experience with developing and executing DEI goals and programming, project management, and performance monitoring using metrics, data analysis, and reporting to drive program outcomes
- Excellent verbal, written, and oral communication skills.
- High degree of professionalism and discretion in maintaining confidentiality and ability to exercise judgment, tact, and diplomacy in handling sensitive information and situations
- Demonstrated proficiency in using technology, including presentation software and social media tools
- Professional experience presenting to diverse audiences, utilizing dynamic facilitation skills and modalities, and creatively adapting in the moment to shift difficult conversations
