Position Objective:
Responsible for the research, design and development of manufacturing systems, processes, machines, tools, and equipment as it relates to developing new automated cells, automated assembly lines, and other operational projects. This will be accomplished by using resources (money, material, and people) in the most economic, efficient, and effective way possible while holding paramount in achieving production excellence and employee safety.
Description:
The Automation Engineer is responsible for the analysis, scope, design, development, programing, implementation, and advanced troubleshooting of automation controls.
- 60% of time spent working on new automated projects
- 20% of time spent working on process improvement projects
- 10% of time spent working with automation techs by providing trouble shooting help and training
- 5% of time meeting with vendors about new technologies that could be implemented at Wagner
- 5% of time spent on department improvements
Essential Position Functions:
- Responsible for implementing and deploying PLC controls
- Responsible for project concepts, project requirements, system designs, model creation, and cost sheets
- Preparation of CAD designs and complete detailing of layout drawings for the production of the equipment
- Evaluate and define project scope. Assure complete coordination of working drawings for use by machining, fabrication, assembly as well as outside vendors
- Schedule and direct project meetings from concept, capital request, kick-off, design reviews, factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing, production launch date, and postmortem
- Analyze work force utilization, space requirements, workflow, and design layout of equipment and workspace for maximum efficiency
- Apply statistical methods to estimate future manufacturing requirements
- Consult with vendors to determine product specifications, materials, or parts and evaluate products according to specifications and quality standards
- Collaborate with management, sales, engineering, operations and other staff regarding manufacturing capabilities, production schedules, and other considerations to facilitate the production processes
- Review manufacturing equipment and processes for improvement potential
- Effectively manage manufacturing changes associated with new automated projects
Essential Position Skills:
- Strong manufacturing process knowledge; preferably in low volume, high mix production model
- Maintain excellent communication skills and high organization skills to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Keeps Manufacturing, Production, Quality, Planning, and Maintenance departments informed of all needed changes to the project.
- Follow established guidelines and management direction with regard to engineering decisions and departmental/company policy.
- Ability to travel, as needed, to support projects.
- Experienced position that requires strong reasoning skills along with the ability to plan and act with little to no guidance and direction from management or others
- Ability to stay current in new automation trends.
Key Work Environment & Physical Demand:
The characteristics described below are representative of those encountered while performing the essential functions of this position.
- Extended hours of work may be necessary as workload fluctuates or due dates approach. This may include nights, weekdays, weekends, and/or holidays
- Job will generally be performed in an office and production environment at Wagner’s Plymouth facility but will require travel to other production and industrial facilities. Travel time will depend on the importance and value of a task(s), condition(s), and/or status of project
- Will occasionally lift or move up to 50 lb
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception
- Job will require standing and sitting for long periods of time, walking quickly, along with the ability to feel objects, tools, and controls.
Skills and Special Requirements:
The Automation Engineer will be comfortable acting as a discipline lead in any multi-disciplined environment. The ideal candidate is proficient in the use of a PC and Microsoft Office Suite and must be proficient in PLC programing, Robotics programing, HMI development, Sensors, and other electrical mechanical devices.
- AutoCAD / AutoCAD Electrical Creo
- Programing: Rockwell Automation Studio 5000 and Fanuc robotics
- History in leading multiple projects
- Intermediate knowledge of Design for Manufacturability and Assembly (DFMA)
- Intermediate knowledge of Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA)
- Excellent computer skill using Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Project, Visio, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Must be able to adapt to different cultural and behavior business characteristics
- Practiced and participated in Lean Manufacturing, 5S activities desired
- Ability to learn new skills and assume new responsibilities
Relationship to Others:
- Tool Room, Maintenance, Automation techs and outside Machine builders, Integrators, and Installers: Provide work direction as needed to fabricate and install equipment, tools, jigs, and fixtures.

Education and Experience:
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Industrial engineering, Manufacturing engineering, Electrical engineering, Computer science, Mechanical engineering, Industrial Engineering, or 8 plus years of related work experience in combination with Associate Degree.
Experience
- Preferred 3 years using technology to improve and automate manufacturing process.
- Required 1 year using technology to improve and automate manufacturing process.
The behavioral characteristics of this position are:
- Position requires a broad engineering ability, and understanding of electrical, mechanical, and MFG/industrial engineering disciplines. Projects are often not routine and require creating project road maps and schedules.
- Skilled to derive and make data driven decisions.
- Ability to lead multiple teams on multiple projects to achieve desirable results.
