Position Title: Surface and Ground Water Technician
Department: Office of Environmental Affairs
Salary Grade: 5002 Per Class Code
Position Status: Full-Time
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Position Summary
Under general supervision of the Environment Director or designee, the technician conducts activities to protect the health and well-being of the people of Santa Clara Pueblo by assessing environmental impacts on surface and ground water from of past, present and future contamination, climate impacts and water quality and quantity. Conducts tests and field investigations to obtain data for use in determining sources and quantity of pollutants in Surface water. Maintains and manages program monitoring wells.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Conducts Surface and Ground Water sampling and recording of field parameters.
- Performs field parameter and data collection at established surface and ground water sites.
- Collects water samples from the surface water bodies and wells to generate data in determining, assessing and evaluating pollutants, trending water quantity and quality in the natural resources
- Collects & prepares sample for testing, records all related data and submits reports as required.
- Sets up, operates and performs maintenance on testing equipment, systems and various testing instrumentation. Protects department assets through the effective operation of all systems and equipment.
- Interfaces with DOE & EPA and other various environmental agencies on environmental issues and concerns pertaining to Santa Clara Pueblo
- Provides technical assistance to the tribe and community members on environmental issues and concerns.
- Represents the OEA at meetings with community and/or environmental agencies.
- Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops and training.
- Eliminates or minimizes hazardous situations by following department safety policies and procedures.
- Informs and educates community members and tribal leadership of potentially hazardous situations or violations of environmental standards.
- Reports to Director as required.
- Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as required.
- Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.
- Contributes to a team effort.
- Performs other duties as assigned or required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Experience in environmental sampling techniques and quality assurance procedures.
- Familiar and able to use computer technology and various software programs, especially MS Windows, Word, Excel, Access and Internet and e-mail programs.
- Experience with Tribal governments, federal programs and grants is preferred.
- Some in-state and out-of-state travel is required.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Ability to act in an independent and conscientious manner using sound judgment.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
Minimum Qualifications
- A bachelor's degree in the science or environmental media or related field is preferred however a combination of education from an accredited college, university, trade school or training facility in a related field and/or direct work experience in this occupation totaling 2 years may substitute for the degree. Experience time will be considered on an individual basis.
