The Central Oregon Agricultural Research and Extension Center ( COAREC ) is seeking a Director. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE ), 12-month, professional faculty position. Depending on the qualifications of the applicant, they will have an accompanying fixed term/tenure-track/tenured position as assistant/associate/full professor.

Central Oregon Agricultural Research and Extension Center ( COAREC ) is located at the center of 60,000 acres of irrigated cropland in the center of central Oregon seed production. High-value, specialty crops provide the core of this progressive agricultural region. COAREC contributes value to Oregon State University and to the local agricultural community through high-quality research programs, outreach, and engagement with stakeholders, including the agricultural industry, governmental and local organizations, and the public through agricultural research and educational opportunities.

This appointment develops, implements, oversees, and assesses research and extension programs of COAREC in support of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Oregon State University. The Director has responsibility and authority for all station programs and major decisions including, but not limited to, vision and direction for the center, strategic planning, fiscal management, and facilities development. The Director oversees and manages all research and extension programs including facilities, equipment, and farm operations at COAREC . The Director has responsibility for developing, implementing, and evaluating short and long-range goals and objectives and developing, implementing, and enforcing plans, policies, procedures, systems, programs, and performance standards at COAREC .

The Director is charged with determining resource needs and priorities, approving the COAREC budget and exceptions to the budget, and participating in strategic planning efforts as part of the management team in the College of Agricultural Sciences.

The Director is responsible for supervising all staff and faculty at COAREC , including research faculty. Supervision includes planning, assigning, and approving work; rewarding/disciplining; responding to grievances; hiring/firing (or effectively recommending); preparing and signing performance evaluations/reviews of all employees including classified, temporary, professional, and academic faculty. The Director determines the center's organizational structure and job content/responsibilities. The Director is responsible for identifying training and professional development needs of all employees and makes appropriate arrangements and/or recommendations for training and professional development.

The Director provides leadership and planning of research that promotes the mission of COAREC , the College of Agricultural Sciences, and Oregon State University. Additionally, the Director promotes and develops programs and services that support research development and the mission of the center through leadership and participation in research and extension planning and projects as appropriate.

There is an expectation for research and scholarship in this position. Expected scholarly outcomes include the development of research proposals and contracts, publication of reports, journal articles, development of patents; and presentations at scientific conferences.

The Director serves as the primary liaison between OSU and local community stakeholders. The Director has responsibility for maintaining strong relationships with stakeholder groups and serving as the contact between the local community and College of Agricultural Sciences to advance the mission of Oregon State University. The Director is responsible for providing strong, positive local relationships with county governments, elected and appointed county/state/federal officials, and local stakeholders. Stakeholders include organizations and individuals with whom OSU collaborates (clients, advisers, and others who share or benefit in the assessment, design, delivery, and evaluation of learning opportunities with OSU ). The Director will facilitate agricultural and community educational services and opportunities within the community. The Director will proactively engage with industry personnel and growers to address local agricultural needs and challenges, work in partnership with the COAREC Advisory Council and seek their input in priority setting and management decisions as appropriate, participate on committees and other professional activities with the College of Agricultural Sciences ( CAS ), University, governmental agency, and community.

The Director ensures center compliance with university policy, industry standards, and State and Federal regulations, participates in and communicates with external organizations that promote and support the research efforts of the center including civic and governmental agencies, commissions, councils, industry partners, and community organizations.

Minimum Qualifications (Staff) / Guidelines (Faculty):

Typically requires Ph.D. or terminal degree in related field. May require the incumbent to be a Tenured/tenure-track faculty member.

Requirements :

Ph.D. degree in agronomy, entomology, horticulture, plant pathology, soils, or a related discipline related to agriculture.


National/international record of scholarly achievement in research, extension, instructional and/or service activities commensurate with the rank of Associate Professor.


Five years of experience supervising and managing personnel.


Five years of experience with budget development and success in meeting budgetary goals.


Clear understanding and commitment to the mission of land grant institutions.


Outstanding professional and collaborative leadership.


Ability to work both independently and cooperatively within a team.


Excellent oral and written communication skills.


Success in securing internal and external programmatic support for instruction, research, service, or outreach.


Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse group of faculty, staff, students, and stakeholders in public agencies and private organizations, growers, volunteers, and the public.


Demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.


This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months. When they have the driving Check mark.

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

Ability to travel frequently within Oregon for events, research, and programming.


Occasional non-standard hours (weekend and evening) may be necessary.
