As the Curator, you'll lead our Displays team, overseeing animal care, display development, and design for our aquarium. You'll maintain high standards of presentation and animal husbandry for our diverse range of salt and freshwater species. Working closely with the General Manager and Merlin’s Global Conservation, Welfare, and Engagement division, you'll create engaging exhibits, maintain animal health, and enhance guest experiences.
Essential Functions :
- Direct exhibit upkeep, animal husbandry practices, and planning for over 20 animal habitats.
- Assist in strategic planning and development of display areas in alignment with company goals.
- Oversee daily care of animal exhibits, including diet preparation, feeding, and maintenance.
- Ensure correct levels of livestock and key species are maintained in all displays.
- Participate in specimen transports, water quality testing, quarantine, diagnosis and treatment of fish disease.
- Supervise day-to-day activities of aquarists and divers, including scheduling and training.
- Maintain accurate records for aquarium systems and exhibit specimens.
- Collaborate with animal welfare divisions and veterinarians to ensure best practices.
- Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations and standards.
- Assist the General Manager in the preparation of the annual display budgets and capital expenditures.
- Oversee any specific research and development projects to improve animal husbandry and the onsite displays
- Represent the site within the North American SEA LIFE Curator community in functions such as regional collection planning and dvie safety.
Education and Experience :
- Undergraduate degree in Life Sciences.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in aquatic animal care.
- Minimum 3 years of managerial experience.
- Advanced open water SCUBA certification.
- Strong knowledge of life support systems and fish disease management.
- Aquarium dive program management skills and experience preferred.
- Advanced knowledge working with a variety of tropical and temperate marine and freshwater specimens.
- Advanced knowledge and experience in the quarantine, diagnosis and treatment of fish disease.
Work Environment : Work may be performed indoors or outdoors, with varying temperatures and surfaces.
Other Requirements :
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, holidays, and weekends.
- Ability to obtain Rescue Diver Certification within 90 days of hire.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification required.
- Travel may be necessary.
