Job description
The Sr Director, Payroll is part of the HR Operations leadership team and brings a strategic vision to the Payroll function. This position oversees all aspects of the payroll function and is responsible for ensuring accurate and timely processing of payroll, compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, and continuous process improvement. This position will partner heavily with business leaders, HR Business Partners, external partners, and department heads.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Designs, evaluates, develops, recommends, and implements short-term and long-term payroll policies, processes, and system enhancements designed to improve business processes for accuracy and efficiencies within the department.
Provide pro-active leadership and guidance to the teams regarding resolution support associated with payroll, payroll tax, and union benefit issues and procedures.
Extensive knowledge and accountability for compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local wage and hour laws, as well as collective bargaining agreements.
Provides thought leadership within HR Operations
Establishes relations and partners strategically with various internal departments including Accounting, HR Systems, People Data & Reporting, and Legal, and manage external payroll service vendor relationships (currently Dayforce).
Analyzes complex transactions, identifies issues, and works with internal and external operational teams to identify causes, assess risks, and implement plans to eliminate future occurrence.
Ensure process documentation and standard operating procedures are maintained and current at all times.
Leads a team of diverse and varying levels of experience and provides coaching and learning opportunities, leaning into each team members strengths while continuing to develop and prepare team members for the next level or other internal opportunities.
Prepare, participate and engage in audits, including WC, internal and external.
Draft and maintain open and effective communications to employees and business partners regarding new payroll developments.
Develop a thorough understanding of the capabilities and shortcomings of existing processes, including timekeeping and benefits, and identify opportunities for continuous improvement and leverage them to business operations.
Identify and mitigate potential payroll-related risks and implement controls to prevent errors, fraud, or compliance violations.
Partners with People Data & Reporting to ensure proper development and analysis of audits and reporting, ensuring information is available in a timely and efficient manner.
Ensure the confidentiality and security of payroll data, adhering to data privacy regulations and safeguarding sensitive employee information.
Serve as project leader for integration of payroll functions during mergers or acquisitions.
Basic Knowledge & Qualifications:
10+ years of related experience in payroll management.
10+ years of related experience in payroll processes.
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance or Human Resources from an accredited college or university preferred.
Specialized Skills:
Extensive experience in HCM and/or payroll systems, preferably Workday and/or Dayforce.
Multi-state, multi-company and multiple jurisdiction payroll tax and labor law experience.
Union experience preferred.
Strong ability to analyze data and recommend changes based on findings relevant to business operations.
Proven history of successful leadership.
Proficient interpersonal communication skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with internal teams, external partners, and senior management.
Project lead experience with integration of payroll systems during mergers and acquisitions.
Travel/Physical Demands:
Team members work in an office or remote work environment.
Must be able to view computer screens and other electronic equipment, paper reports, and documents for extended periods of time where visual strain may result.
Must be able to push, pull, lift, carry, or maneuver weights of up to ten (10) pounds independently and twenty-five (25) pounds with assistance.
Occasional travel may be required to attend business meetings, training programs, or other situations necessary for the accomplishment of some or all of the daily responsibilities of this position.

Compensation is based on geographic location and individual pay decisions will vary based on demonstrated job related skills, knowledge, experience, education, certifications, etc.
Corporate Positions: In addition to the base salary, may be eligible for an annual performance bonus that is based on individual and company performance.
Onsite Property Positions: In addition to the base salary, may be eligible for a discretionary weekly, monthly and/or quarterly bonus based on budget.
