Overall Responsibility: The Medical Coder will be responsible for coding professional services at our high-volume pain management practice. The Medical Coder will review medical record documentation and assign accurate diagnosis and procedure codes for services provided by physicians and other qualified healthcare professionals. The Medical Coder will perform analysis of medical records to ensure completeness and other HIM duties for both practice and hospital medical records.
Remote work a potential for experienced coders but must have ability to work onsite in Wichita, KS, as needed.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities Essential Functions: - Provides appropriate CPT and ICD-10 codes for professional services and office procedures, focusing on Evaluation and Management encounters and pain management procedures.
- Provides assistance to providers with coding updates and/or changes and education.
- Assists billing office staff in a timely manner with coding related denials, questions, and education.
- Performs coding analysis, conducts audits of patient charts for coding assessment and compliance purposes, and provides related results and education to providers.
- Performs analysis on hospital medical records for physician deficiencies and enters and/or removes deficiencies in EMR. Notifies physicians and other health care professionals of deficiencies. Maintains confidentiality of patient and hospital related business.
- Reviews daily transcribed documents for all clinic and hospital encounters, ensures accuracy and updated deficiency list once completed. Transcribed documents are noted as completed.
- Can assist with appropriately assigning codes for inpatient, outpatient and pain management procedures completed for hospital encounters, on an as needed basis.
- Maintains knowledge of current state and federal coding guidelines.
- Maintains education requirements for credentials.
Licensure and Certification: - Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or
- Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or
- Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or
- Certified Coding Specialist-Physician-based (CCS-P)
Required Skills, Education and/or Experience: - Associate's Degree in Health Information Technology preferred
- Two years professional and E&M coding experience required, pain management and coding experience preferred
- Must be knowledgeable of insurance payors
- Ability to prioritize, work independently, and communicate (orally and written) effectively
- Interpersonal skills to interact with other staff and outside contacts
- Good customer service skills
- Proficiency in using 3M coding software and electronic health record systems.
