Job description
OVERVIEW
Assists the Coordinator in managing the medical care function of a licensed mental health facility operating on a 24/7 basis providing individuals in psychiatric/behavioral crisis highly intensive mental health services and temporary residential care to and/or referral and involving psychiatric, neuropsychiatric, psychological, behavioral and other functional assessments; stabilization management; medication management; intensive care and case management services and training of and support to families, other caregivers and service providers. Work is performed under general supervision and is guided by agency policies and procedures, quality assurance, public and private payor guidelines, professional practices and including ethical standards related to client interactions, Board of Pharmacy and Board of Nursing regulations, state and federal licensure and accreditation regulations and guidelines.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of the principles, standards, practices and techniques related to psychiatric nursing; thorough knowledge of nursing practices, pharmacology and psychological/physical effects of alcohol and drug use/abuse/withdrawal; thorough knowledge of Board of Pharmacy and Board of Nursing regulations relating to prescription drug storage, administration and documentation; thorough knowledge of disease concept of chemical dependency, communicable disease concepts and other infectious disease issues; thorough knowledge of the laws and legal procedures relating to hospital admission; thorough knowledge of the medical procedures, treatment providers and other agencies in service to the individual population; thorough knowledge of the financial and benefit coverage policies and procedures of private third party insurers serving the region and of Medicaid and Medicare; considerable knowledge of local community resources and service delivery systems, including support services, eligibility criteria and intake processes, termination criteria and procedures, and generic community resources. considerable knowledge of social casework management, including need assessment and supportive level counseling; considerable knowledge of the theories, practices, techniques, treatment modalities, intervention and support programs related to the care and treatment of the mental health crisis population, and the substance abusive, mentally and/or emotionally disabled populations and individuals with co-occurring MH/SA disorders; considerable knowledge of service plan development, training and evaluation. ability to establish and maintain rapport with the individual population; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff of other private and public agencies and organizations; ability to plan the work of, train, supervise and evaluate subordinates; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to collect, compile and evaluate electronically sourced data and prepare reports; ability to function calmly in stressful situations ability to conduct effective interviews, observe, assess and record individual behaviors and functioning and develop treatment and service plans.
TYPICAL EDUCATION, TRAINING AND WORK EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and considerable professional experience in psychiatric nursing serving the mentally ill, emotionally disabled and/or substance abusive population and some supervisory experience.
LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATIONS
State Certified Registered Nurse. Valid Virginia Driver's License; current First Aid and CPR certification.
