JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Clinical Laboratory Scientist I
Manages People: No
Experience: 0-2 years of testing experience in high complexity testing
Level of Supervision: Occasionally directed in several aspects of the work.
Job Summary:
• The Clinical Laboratory Scientist I handles all infectious disease testing with a goal of providing
100% accuracy when handling samples. Performs all essential functions such as laboratory
safety, supporting delivery and workflow, maintaining productivity and quality assigned
targets, and providing effective communication with laboratory management and team.
Essential Responsibilities/Duties:
• Performing sample prep, DNA extraction and PCR.
• Running KingFisher Flex, Accufill, VeritiPro, QuantStudio 12K and 5.
• Performing accurate manual and electronic pipetting of small sample volumes.
• Reviewing and assisting Lab Management and Quality Department with workflow updates
and ensuring SOPs are up to date.
• Assist with maintaining accurate inventory at all times.
• Assist with preventative maintenance checks and decontamination of equipment and
workspaces.
• Facilitate and ensure appropriate work output completed based on current metrics.
• Deep understanding of procedures, SOPs and QC/controls to ensure integrity of results
• Successfully complete all CEU credits as required for CAP accreditation.
• Under the direction of the direct leader, track and review all incident reports and issues
related to compliance within the lab
Qualifications:
Education –
• 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution that, at a minimum,
includes either 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR 24
semester hours of science courses that include six semester hours of chemistry, six
semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical
laboratory technology in any combination; AND
• Laboratory training including either completion of a clinical laboratory training
program approved or accredited by the ABHES, NAACLS, or other organization
approved by HHS (note that this training may be included in the 60 semester hours
listed above), OR at least three months documented laboratory training in each
specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing.
• A minimum of an associate degree in a biological or chemical science or medical
laboratory technology from an accredited institution AND be certified by the ASCP,
AMT or other organization deemed comparable by OASD(HA) or their designee
Center for Laboratory Medicine Services (CLMS) as an MLT or MT/MLS; OR
• Successfully completed an official U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training
course of at least 50 weeks duration and currently hold the military enlisted
occupational specialty of medical laboratory specialist (laboratory technician).

Experience –
• 1 year high complexity PCR laboratory experience required.
• Basic understanding of the data and internal controls
• Broad understanding of sterile technique and cleaning necessary for a PCR Lab.
Mental/Physical Demands & Work Environment:
Vision, hearing speech, movements requiring the use of wrists, hands and/or fingers. Must have the
ability to sit for extended periods. Light physical effort requires handling average weight objects up to
25 lbs and some standing and walking. Learning, thinking, concentration and the ability to work under
pressure, particularly during busy times. Must be able to pay close attention to detail and be able to
work as a member of a team to ensure excellent customer service. Must have the ability to interact
effectively with co-workers and customers, and exercise self-control and diplomacy in customer and
employee relations’ situations. Must have the ability to exercise discretion as well as appropriate
judgments when necessary. Must be proactive in finding solutions.
Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials including biological and
chemical hazards.
