Unique among similar departments in the UC system and across the country, the Department of Literature is a community of scholars, critics, and writers working in a comparative, global, and interdisciplinary context. Faculty and students work in Spanish, English, French, Arabic, German, Russian, Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Italian, Greek, Latin and other world languages and literatures. Since our founding in the 1960s, we have been known for our innovative accomplishments in comparative, multilingual, transnational, interdisciplinary, and multi-media creativity, research, and teaching, as well as for our dedication to the studies of encounters, connections, and exchanges between cultures and societies from the antiquities to the present.
The department offers four undergraduate majors, eleven minors, and two graduate degrees, which combined represent the wide breadth of research our department values.
Applies professional UC Academic HR concepts, organization and / or system wide policies, and procedures to provide guidance to supervisors and managers to resolve a variety of academic human resources issues of moderate scope and complexity. Principal advisor to the Chair and Chief Administrative Officer for the Department of Literature in issues concerning academic personnel. Manages overall operation of academic personnel including long-range planning and analysis. Initiates, prepares, and submits all academic recommendation files for: new permanent, visiting, ladder-rank and PLSOE/LSOE reappointments, appraisals, normal and accelerated merit reviews and promotions. Initiates, prepares and submits all documents for immigrant and non-immigrant visas and labor certifications. Analyzes all personnel actions to insure compliance with University, Federal and Union policies, and serves as department resource person, interpreting policies for the Chair, Vice Chair, CAO, ad hoc committees and faculty. Participates in faculty meetings to provide policy interpretation, historical data, and exception analysis. Ensures compliance with Academic Affirmative Action requirements; reviews, assesses, and recommends revisions to existing policy and procedures; develops and formulates changes. Provides work direction to the Academic Personnel / Events Coordinator and the student assistant.
Experience with both routine and non-standard computerized Payroll/Personnel System entries. Ability to analyze past transactions and determine the correct path of action for multiple situations.
Working knowledge of benefits administration and the coordination between the offices of academic personnel, human resources, and payroll.
Demonstrated experience of strong supervisory and training skills to organize workflow and meet deadlines. Experience may involve observing and evaluating staff development needs.
