Ranchos de Ontiveros, home of Native9 wines, is a family-owned estate winery in the Santa Maria Valley. Owner, James Ontiveros, is the ninth generation of Alta California, and still farms the same valley that generations of his family have called home. Through the struggle of a cold windswept coast desert, these vines reach for water and nutrients in the depleted earth. When combined with purposeful farming in the cool Mediterranean climate, Santa Maria bears fantastic raw product for winemaking. Our singular goal at Ranchos de Ontiveros is to make wine as complex as the story of how they came to be.
We are currently hiring for a part-time Estate Wine Guide to join our small team. The ideal candidate will be a detail-oriented self-starter, have a passion for connecting with like-minded wine aficionados, and excels at providing best-in-class customer service.
Responsibilities:
• Provide private tours and tastings at our Estate in Santa Maria.
• Perform opening and closing procedures for experiences.
• Maintain a clean and efficient area at our ranch tasting location and adjacent ranch home.
• Build and maintain relationships with local industry professionals, clients, and vendors.
• Update and maintain POS database with reservations, sales, and customer notes in Commerce 7 POS platform.
• Maintain inventory levels required to fulfill tastings and orders, including tracking samples in our database.
• Perform tele-sales throughout the year and during peak purchasing seasons.
• Enter in new wine club memberships into Point of Sale.
• Enter wine shipping orders into fulfillment warehouse software, currently Wine Shipping.
• Accurately track orders and maintain fulfillment status in POS system.
• Attend on site events, including three club shipment events annually.
• Attend off-site tasting events and dinners as needed.
• Update and maintain tasting lists.
• Assist in providing relevant social media content to Vinlo creative in the form of video and photography
• Update and maintain POS products as needed.
• May be asked to provide support in wholesale channel as needed.
Required Skills:
• Must be 21 years or older.
• Computer literacy including POS platforms, software systems, and Microsoft office including excel and word.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Responsible Beverage Service Certificate. (Certification may be completed upon hiring date)
• Strong attention to small details.
• Dependable and with strong time-management skills.
• Must have reliable transportation.
• Ability to pivot direction as needed based on company needs and goals.
• Ability to trouble shoot and make decisions to improve experience and operating procedures.
• Be proactive at finding work when visitation is slower, which includes reviewing client history to impact daily sales, clean or build database, improve POS materials, review website for updates, research alternative strategies to increase business, or other idea driven initiatives.
• Professional demeanor and manner.
• Ability to lift 50 pounds.
• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
• Ability to work weekends, holidays, and some evenings.
Education/Experience
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Previous sales experience in wine or related field.
• Some wine education or completed course work. Certifications from WSET or Court of Master Sommelier a plus.
• Knowledge of direct shipping laws and regulations.
• Food and/or hospitality experience recommended.
Compensation and hours
• $25/hour with commissions and bonus structure.
• 25-32 hours per week including most weekends and some weekdays with flex schedule.
• Mileage reimbursement when attending off-site events, wine pick-ups, or deliveries.
This position reports directly to Brand Manager and takes direction from ownership when applicable. Other responsibilities may be required throughout employment.
