Veterinary Diagnostician Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory Job Summary Provide leadership for the necropsy, receiving and histology laboratories within the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at the College of Veterinary Medicine. Additionally, serve as an outreach coordinator and point person for interaction with VDL, VTH, DVM clients and Veterinary Clinics/Hospitals.
Duties & Responsibilities - Supervise the operations of the necropsy laboratory and receiving section and assist in daily necropsy and receiving needs.
o Oversee and train staff to function in either necropsy or receiving
o Maintain a clean and biosecure environment
o Maintain all major pieces of equipment and instruments
o Supervise/coordinate operation of the incinerator
o Oversee necropsy technicians and student workers
o Assure proper cleanup of the laboratory space and equipment
o Be responsible for hiring and evaluation of personnel in association with pathologists - Supervise the receiving laboratory
o Oversee and train staff to function in either receiving or necropsy
o Work with various sections throughout the VDL in developing best practices for sample handling and distribution
o Be responsible for hiring and evaluation of personnel in association with pathologists - Oversee and assist in daily necropsy and receiving needs
o Prosection of specimens
o Teach proper use of all equipment
o Assist in teaching proper necropsy technique to students (veterinary and technician) and residents
o Assist in interpretation of gross tissues
o Assure collection of proper specimens for diagnostic procedures and distribution to appropriate laboratories
o Work closely with Quality Assurance personnel
o Assist as needed in grossing and trimming of biopsy or necropsy tissues for histologic examination, under the supervision of pathologist or resident
o Assure proper workflow for the day and personnel assignment in the receiving and necropsy area
o Monitor case submission trends especially infectious diseases - Outreach - Liaison and point person for interaction with VDL, VTH, DVM clients and Veterinary Clinics/Hospitals
o Assure proper sample submission understanding for clients
o Track submissions for completion of work
o Participate and organize presentations and booths at meetings or organizations
* Example - ISVMA convention, Mississippi Valley meeting, Chicago VMA meetings - Teaching
o Assist in procurement and preservation of teaching material
o Assist in teaching proper necropsy technique to students (veterinary and technician) and residents
o Assist in gross rounds as needed
o Maintain photo archive of necropsy lesions - Research
o Oversee, schedule and assist as available in research projects
o Assist pathologists/diagnostic laboratory faculty and residents as available in their research/scholarly efforts - Histology Laboratory
o Work with the Histology Laboratory Manager in oversight of the histology laboratory
* Assure trimming of tissue for histology
* Assure personnel schedule to address workload
* Review the needs for staffing levels - Other responsibilities
o Meet routinely with various sections to identify issues, prioritize workloads and improve processes
* Sections include - pathology, histology, molecular, microbiology, virology, parasitology, office/billing and quality assurance
o Other effort as needed to support faculty and staff of the VDL
Additional Physical Demands Allergies to hay, straw and pet dander may cause discomfort based on the location of the position within the College of Veterinary Medicine.
Minimum Qualifications DVM degree. Veterinary practice, diagnostic laboratory, or pathology experience.
Appointment Information This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The minimum salary starts with the range of $90,000.
Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity.
